decided humor was the answer........i am not a looker and have been described by one here as lookin very "normal".....and i took that as a huge compliment......but i learned early on.....at least by third grade.......that those around me liked to laugh, and that if i made them do it.......it made me feel good..."normal" maybe.......anyhoo........i have done some stand-up comedy and had fun with it (as in i did not bomb)........and written more material than i have ever used..........i think if i could have any job it would be letterman's........but would be happy just to write for him, conan, or SNL..........so what did you do or not do to feel more normal as a jw kid?........i also made valentine cards and did the pledge!!.....serious double lifer here...........soory................oompa

I'm the same as you. I just tried to blend in with the background scenery and I think that is very common for us JWs that were raised in it. I sort of still feel that same way now. It's hard not to feel that way when you've spent your whole childhood coping in that way.

Like others mentioned here, I just tried to be in the background somewhere.
One year - in Junior High (Middle School?), I got very acquainted with the library - as not too many kids frequented that.
My ex-wife (a JW) went to the same High School as I did - and she mentioned to me that she never saw me there... of course... that may be because she was also somewhere in the backbround.
In fact... I had/have a sense of humor... albeit somewhat twisted... and can surprise some folks - if they don't know me very well.
Regards,
Jim TX

I tried to participate without participating . My dad is not a JW so I had a few liberties.

Yeah, I have 2 cousins that were raised as JWs but their father was not a JW. They were also raised away in another state separate from the rest of the extended family that were JWs. They had much more normal childhoods and participated in sports and did not feel like that had to hide. It really made a difference.

I was only 25 when I was first a witless. My sister saw me getting ready to go to a meeting and told me she had never seen me dress so dowdy. I had on maryjane shoes, an aline skirt and just a regular blouse. I was known before by my unusual clothes in the hippie world. I didn't even know what to say to her. I was trying to blend in for sure! It must have been hell for you kids out there growing up that way. We used to consider it a privilege to be called a "freak" as a hippie!

IT was very difficult growing up, especially in school. School assemblies where the flag salute was done or the national anthem. It was so hard to remain seated. I could feel myself turning red all over. Totally embarrassing.
I made my own kids do the same thing and now feel sorry for that.
