I logged on to this 'new board' today to post on it for the first time and saw your post, free2beme. Just want to say "so sorry for your loss". Indeed, there is a time and place for everything.
I'm so sorry to hear about your mother-in-law.
You are very right about holding your tongue. I just went through this 2 weeks ago with my father. By the time I got there, his morphine had him pretty much out of it. So he wasn't discussing religion. But he had several people from the hall visit. Seeing the JWs again was something I had dreaded. But I was respectful, kept quiet, and nodded a lot. And they were respectful too. Their beliefs popped up, but we didn't make it a focus and got past religion to sharing the loss of a man we all cared a great deal for. And I am so thankful. It wasn't the time to deal with arguments.
I wish I could say I was there at the end, but I had stayed all night and went home to take a shower when he passed away. I wish I was there and I kick myself for leaving when I did. But another part of me is also glad I wasn't there. Glad that I could be removed from a moment of sadness that would be forever etched in my mind.
Be strong. What you experienced is hard to deal with. There may also be the potential for people wishing to confront you if you go to the JW funeral service. All I can say is that in my case, it was very friction-free and I hope it goes the same for you.
free2beme,
If you go to the Memorial Service, hope it goes smoothly. Also, you have a PM.

I'm sorry for your loss, Free2Be. And yes... do I ever agree... wholeheartedly.
Love,
