mkr: "I happen to know of TWO polygamous couples and I know a LOT of couples in long term 'open' relationships... In fact I happen to be in one."

Wow. TWO polygamous couples. You must be an expert, then. As to "open relationships," they are not the subject being discussed on this thread.

I would turn anyone in for welfare fraud or abuse though.

The Biggest abusers of fraud in our system are DOCTORS and INSTITUTIONS.

And the majority of them are getting away with it.

Have you ever called any of the social services to report a fraud? I have. You know what happened? I stayed on the phone for hours. It took my whole day being on hold, being transferred back and forth, repeating answers to the same questions, and after 6 f**** hours of this...my phone battery died.

I called again the next day to try to reach the person I last spoke to. IMPOSSIBLE. And they wanted to start all over because they could not find the file of report from day before because it was "incompleted".

    Lesson learned. It's futile.

    No one really cares.

And some are obviously "paid off" to look the other way.

Yes, and sorry, sammielee, for shifting the polygamy subject from the UK to the US.

No problem - polygamy is occurring in every single country around the world so none are exempt. It does exist in the USA and not just in FLDS households either I'm sure.

I suppose what I find interesting is also the choices that we make when it comes to what we find offensive and what action we choose to take when it comes to illegal activity based on those choices.

For example; Madoff was ripping of billions of dollars from people and while some knew it was illegal, they did nothing because it didn't affect them or it may have been of benefit to them. Now - those same people have a guy break into their home to steal some stuff so they call the police and follow him through the court system to make sure he pays for what he did to them. Both instances of robbers - but they choose which robber they will go after.

Polygamy is illegal. Growing weed on your window ledge as a means to control your cancer pain is also illegal. Perhaps neither one is affecting you - but yet some people will call the cops on the weed grower and not the polygamist or vice versa.

I would turn them in if they kept the women locked up in the house and never let them learn english...that is slavery..

We have men(If you can call them that) in this country that have multiple babies with multiple girlfriends, the girlfriends get assistance from the government..get their home free or cheap..get food supplements...get food stamps..and get a check for the child/children every month..the boyfriend knows just when which women get their check and he shows up to claim his share...he just lives off of them. Didn't even have to marry them...just gave them a line of how pretty they were and how very much he loved them and they didn't need a piece of paper to prove their love for each other...and he just happens to be absent when the child is sick or they run out of food or electric because he got all the money...

Snoozy, you have a good point. According to the article, the benefits system in the UK encourages the polygamous behavior. The benefits system in the USA encourages women to remain unmarried, with their boyfriends going from "flower to flower" pollenating, so to speak. Seems like we need to overhaul the system.

For instance, in KY it is extremely common for grandparents who are on Social Security to legally adopt their grandchildren so that they can get social security benefits for the grandchild also. People are desperate for money and the way the system is set up, they dismantle their families to get benefits.

    The science of unintended consequences.

Wow StAnn, I didn't know about the grandparents part. It makes sense though..a lot of grandparents have custody of the grandkids in our cities..I just didn't realize they could collect for them.

I like the way you put it .."Flower to flower"... much nicer...

If these woman have no more self esteem/self worth at this point, they will only be a drain on society anyway. If a child is involved, that makes it another story all together.

I do not support polygamy but.......

I guess it all goes back to the difference of viewpoints--whether or not to police what people do in their personal lives or not. When it hurts or abuses the people involved, or hurts society (economically or in any way), then I completely agree with stepping in.

This is the reason I see the Mormons' effective opposition to gay marriage a bit hypocritical. Even in the mainstream church, they believe they will be involved in polygamy in the afterlife. If that's the ideal, then why shouldn't others be allowed to marry whomever they wish? Civil rights for me and not for thee.........?

Do you really think so many grandparents are lining up to get that money just because they want it??? I know many, many grandparents who are helping raise grandkids in today's society and there isn't a one that I know of that runs out and takes on the responsibility just to get a few bucks. I give people the benefit of the doubt - that they really care for their grandkids and are trying to help. If they try to give those kids a stable environment that drug addict parents can't, I applaud them for that - even if it takes some kind of assistance. sammieswife.
