Will 'Right-to Die' Become a 'Duty-to-Die'?

In my experience, treating older people with chemotherapy only exacerbates and prolongs their suffering. I suspect too often it's given as treatment with no benefits, and the hospitals make money off of medicare. I don't think people realize how extreme a treatment chemo is.

Aside from the issue of insurance coverage, I disagree with a lot in that article. It seems the writer is naive.

The law does not require treatment when depression is suspected, and very few terminal patients who ask for assisted suicide are referred for psychiatric consultations.

I don't think terminally ill patients should be forced to be evaluated and treated for depression. Of course they're farking depressed. Let them die peacefully and legally if they so choose. Prozac is not the answer in this situation.

In most hospitals, in most states, every day, people are intentionally killed. It's known as the Morphine drip. Terminally ill folks are given an overdose of Morphine, not just to kill pain and relax them, but to suppress respiration. They slowly suffocate--one of the most inhumanes to die IMHO. Doctors/nurses are rarely if ever prosecuted for this. It is the secret assisted suicide.

If someone wants assisted suicide because of a mental illness (not terminal illness), then they should be screened carefully and treated if it is believed treatment will significantly improve their illness. If not, then they should have the right to die too. I've seen many people with treatment-resistant severe chronic mental illness and I don't think they should have less options than people with treatment-resistant severe chronic physical illness.

This jackass needs to be kicked square in his jesus loving nuts. The state's offer was an offer of mercy. Would they PREFER to have received a simple "no now go die in a ditch somewhere..."

The state said we won't pay millions to possibly extend your life for weeks, we will however pay WHEN YOU DECIDE to help you die with dignity and no pain. Nowhere in the letter did it say "two men will be coming to your door tonight to cut you to pieces with their switchblades..."

It's not enough for the idiot who wrote this to be embarrassed... He should be ASHAMED.
