I've only made stew a couple of times, but am trying a new one today. Any of you ever used a recipe like this? I'll let you know later on if it's any good. ;-)

Other than the allspice and the sugar, that is pretty standard. Crockpots are great for this, try lamb sometime. Maybe a lamb shank, toss in some sage and rosemary, garlic and onion powder, beef stock cubes, chopped onion, a couple teeth of minced garlic, new potatos, pearled barley, salt to taste, mushrooms (baby 'bellas rock), water (of course), some sherry, toss some baby carrots in partway and finish it again at a late stage with a healthy dose of cheap sherry. Fresh baked bread and your poison of choice.
Done.

The recipe seems to be missing Potatoes, celery, and carrots! To me, those 3 are the base to any beef stew.
If you ever do a stew that uses Potatoes, make sure to add the potatoes half way through the cooking of the stew, or they will be too soft and mushy. The same also applies to the carrots.

+1 on that. Carrots too. Actually, I add most veggies in later if I can.

LOL I just edited to add carrots too, but you got me!
It is really cold and rainy here now, I think I will whip up a batch!

They're to the left of the other components on the very last of the ingredients.
Incidentally, I probably need to get some measuring spoons. I just used a regular teaspoon and a looks about right amount. ;-) Also, I used spice jars for the garlic and onion, and there was no conversion for spices to actual garlic and onions. Will see how it turns out. lol I can smell it pretty strongly right now.

JD, I never use measuring spoons. I can tell what is a "teaspoon" by putting it in my hand. A gift I got from Grandma!

It sounds fantastic!! I love beef stew on a cold evening. Maybe have hot corn bread and iced tea. YUMMY!!! Chocolate cake for desert.

Actually, I am using a crockpot, or an $8 Wal Mart knock off anyway. ;-) I've had lamb one time and I didn't like it. It had a very strong flavor that didn't sit well with me. Maybe I got some bad lamb?
Man, this stew is smelling stronger and stronger--making me hungry.
