Try as I may, my Presario moves too slow.

I have tried several registry cleaners, defragged, checked for spyware... all the usual stuff. It is not terribly slow, but just seems slower than it used to be. Any suggestions?

I know this is far too general - but I throw it out there with sleepy eyes as I head to bed, hoping that someone puts me onto a few things to try when I wake.

Thanx guys/gals for the help. Perhaps I am just tired.

    Get a new computer.

They slow down - the only other thing you can do is reformat your disk. Have you removed any unnecessary sofware, cleaned up your internet explorer, deleted most of your restore points, THEN defraged? Try that.

Download and run 'Autoruns', a free piece of software now owned by Microsoft.

Go to the "Logon" tab of the application.

Uncheck any applications that you DON'T wish to run automatically at startup.

    Close Autoruns.

    Restart your PC

This will remove background applications that are hogging system resources. Sometimes this can make a difference.

Guessing that this computer is getting old now, you might be able to speed it up a bit by removing some programs ,

computers of that age have usually a low amount of RAM. bogging down the system when you load up computer with a lot of programs.

To be honest though even computers 2 to 3 old , you would see a big improvement.

If you don't want to buy new try buying used.

Another thing, IE 8 has been terribly slow for some folks on XP. The fix is here: http://www.edbott.com/weblog/?p=2443

leavingwt is right about autoruns. But so many details omitted. How much RAM? what OS? Are you on a network? Wireless?

If not on network you can shut down TONS of services completely and free up loads of RAM.

What virus scanner you running? What are your update settings for various programs?

if all else fails, format the HD and start fresh. When I can take it anymore thats always how I fix it for good....

I have downloaded the Autoruns zip file and unzipped it. Problem is, I have no idea what I can delete from the start menu safely.

How can I reformat the hard drive? Is this a difficult process? Will I lose files?
