    Taking the square root is dividing. You're dividing each side by its root. The problem is that the roots are not the same. Unless you divide both sides by the same root, it is incorrect. If you divide by the same root, only one side will simplify.

    Dude, that doesn't make sense. It's perfectly ok to take the square root of each side of an equation. The problem is the example above didn't take into account both the plus and minus.

    You're skipping steps. Any time you simplify by taking square roots, you're dividing both sides by the root to cancel an exponent from each side. Your example illustrates why it is no ok to take square roots on both sides of an equation. It may or may not be correct.
