I would say the image is reversed up and down as well. If you lay on your side and look in the mirror, your left and right is up and down, and the left and right will still be reversed. So there!

You're skipping steps. Any time you simplify by taking square roots, you're dividing both sides by the root to cancel an exponent from each side.

But it's perfectly ok if you consider both the plus and minus!
