I thought of that, too. The fact of even touching the glass is participating in their ceremony. I thought I might have to go to take someone this year. Was thinking of leaning back as the glass comes and by pointing, direct the glass to be passed to the person on other side without me having to touch it.
Then, I thought about exiting toward restrooms just as elders are preparing to pass out emblems. With movements going on at the front, it would be less awkward than when everyone is completely still and silent.
But, just found out that I won't have to be going, after all. Whew!
This ceremony reminds me of the way the Gauls would cut off someone's head, pass it around, and drink the blood from it as a victory. I still think there is some very sinister implication in the whole thing....whether you drink the blood or not.
