"For every animal you don't eat, I'll eat three."
If there are rescue centres which take abandoned horses, they should be approached. If not, then sadly their best option is probably slaughter - if they're starving, it would suggest that they aren't able to fend for themselves so letting them return to the wild would be unfair on them.
I forgot to mention our website is on Facebook for S.A.V.E. Join up if you like. Some are vegatarians! I have been known to be one before but do eat fish again. I miss a steak every once in awhile and those chickens! I can remember as a child my mother fixed rabbit and I couldn't figure out what it was and when I found out I got sick. She never did that again.

from Keysore:
A cat or a dog is a lot easier to care for than a horse. Have you actually encountered an animal that was starving to death? Is allowing them to suffer in such a way more compassionate than putting them down? Perhaps it is you who needs to re-evaluate your humanity.
Keysore, yes many times. I have taken in starving and abused animals. I have spent hours taking care of strays. One of the most memorable was a lack luster old female cat, starving, her coat ruined with matts, and she was almost blind. I spent hours holding her in my lap and combing out her knots. She purred in my lap the entire time, even though I knew I was causing some pain. Under those huge knots were colonies of fleas. I cried as I combed her, but she purred with happiness and would actually fall asleep as I carefully cut and combed. It took 2 solid days but she was finally free of her matting so twisted up it was pulling her skin apart. My next door neighbor is a vet tech, with many years experience. She took one look and said the cat was very old and suffering from full blown diabetes. We had her put down. Before that old girl died, she was loved and fed and taken care of. I did all I could do. I did not extend her suffering.
To add to this. I do not fault anyone for enjoying their steaks, BBQ chicken etc. I do fault anyone who doesn't care for their livestock, pets, etc, in a humane way.
There is something playing on HBO on Demand about a farm hanging their pigs by a chain of the end of a forklift to kill them....it takes 45 minutes as they strangle in the air. They were found not guilty because the law isn't clear. The judge was clearly disgusted. The farmers looked like inbred morons.
We as humans have a responsibility to be Humane to all around us. Remember that most serial killers start out by torturing animals in their youth.
Again, I don't fault those who eat meat, we just have to be kind to them while they are alive.

The rising abandonment of horses is straining law enforcement officers, who, while facing tightened budgets, must learn about the animal and the laws that govern them
Maybe if the cops would concentrate on doing something productive instead of chasing after adults engaging in activities that should be legal for adults they would have the time to take care of this?
Would you slaughter a cat or a dog that was starving?
Ooooh yeah, would and have it's the right thing to do...
You don't want to eat meat? Fine it's your choice but get out of my way!

Sadly someone posted the above. Thats ok but I think if you knew how your meat was processesed you might think twice about what you consume.
It is our reponsibility as consumers to demand that animals you consume are treated humanely before they wind up on your dinner table.

As Jim Gaffigan would say "I don't know what they do with those chickens but it's delicious...'
I'm glad that you got your ass crack all bent out of shape over those poor animals, I don't really care! Just kill um and grill um and toss them on my plate please!
