Portability!
I haven't had a desktop for a few years now...I don't miss it. I can do everything I need to on my laptop.

I hear ya loud and clear. I never could "sell" the Witness Ideal cause i never really " believed" in it. I used to avoid Mac, because I was a gamer and couldn't play them on anything other than a PC. That all changed with the introduction of Pentium processors to the Mac line. Since i could run XP on a Mac with "bootcamp", i decided to take the plunge. Could you tell me about VMWare Fusion a little bit? I tried parallels once, but was put off of it as it split my Ram up. I have 1 gig, and it wold take half to run Parallels and half was given to MacOS. I didn't like it.

cameo, First check to make sure your monitor cable connections are secure. Okay?
I had a similar problem once. It was not the monitor or the computer, it was the battery.
About $10, popped out the old one, popped in the new one, and got about 4 more years out of a 5-year-old machine. Cheap and simple.
Windoze apps can be run on a Mac, too. What little more you invest up front (Mac) you save in constant headaches with reinstalls, bugginess and battling viruses (PC).

lurk3r, I haven't tried parallels but I think it's the same general idea. VMWare splits up the RAM too. I have 4 GB of RAM on the Mac, and Vista is getting 1 GB. I think I could allocate more, but I haven't tried yet. When I launch Vista at boot time I'm only getting to use 2 GB of the RAM. I think that may be because I'm running the 32 bit version of Vista. I'm going to try the 64 bit version and see if I have better luck. I don't think I'd try gaming in VMWare. I don't have that kind of patience.

I have both. The wife primarily uses the desktop computer. I primarily use the laptop. Most laptops last up to 7 years, they say.
Mine is right at that age and going just fine. The desktop computer is more than 10 years old and doing just fine. I would prefer a second laptop for the replacement when the desktop is done. I love the convenience of the portability and hate when the wife needs the laptop. Just leave the printer in place and plug into it when you need to print.
A laptop allows me to post from hotels, coffee shops, libraries, work, home, whereever I have a signal.
It was only a matter of time.
My wife and I would be lost without our laptops and wireless.
If your problem is just the screen, you should be able to replace it very cheaply with a second hand one or spend a bit more and get a nice new LCD one.
The problem may be with the video card, they are cheap too.
I have had several puters over ten years old. They don't break down, they just get replaced with faster ones.
Cheers
Chris
The screen "burned out".
I am back in bizness!
