Don't they know of African GB's thread about whole families becoming apostate?

I have it on good authority that at the recent circuit assembly it was announced from the platform that there had been reports of groups of families and friends getting together to study on Family Worship Night and that this was not to continue as FWN is for families ONLY and not for other brothers and sisters to get involved in.
Isn't that how the "great Bethel apostasy" of the early 80's started - groups of people getting to gether to study the Bible without an explicit program outline from the FDS?

That is exactly why they don't want small groups getting together unofficially to discuss the bible. They don't want a repeat of what happened in 1980 - 81 because with the internet now available to one and all, they'd have a much harder time trying to keep a lid on it and would face a much larger fallout than what they did nearly 3 decades ago.

What a bunch of frigging idiots. Actually, I hope this new ruling wakes alot of Dubs up. It was shit like this that got me wondering what the hell they had to hide and what on earth were they so afraid of? There's got to be numerous Witnesses who are going to stop and wonder what on earth could be so wrong with getting together with some friends to discuss the bible.......

I dunno.....just when you think these senile old farts at Crooklyn can't get any more pathetic, they manage to still surprise.

Regarding the "great Bethel apostasy", I'm assuming y'all are referring to the Ray Franz saga? Or is there something else?

thats horrible, this was a wonderful thing for be to be able to do back in the day, being single (it seems like you are one of three statuses: quickly married, single or df'ed) it was great to hang out with other people, made studying more interesting.

Next thing you know they'll ban congregation picnic's........oops to late

OMG...was this really why they stopped? One of the good JW memories from my youth was the picnic at the forest perserves and I never knew why they discontinued it. Wow... learn somethin new every day.

In fact, by not meeting in small groups in private homes, the Watchtower Society cannot be said to be following the pattern of the first century Christians.

This has been brought out before about not having small groups meeting to do their own private Bible studies or Watchtower reviews .

When I was newly married my husband would never do a family study with me so I asked a pioneer sister my age to come over and prepare for meetings with me . We thought it was encouraging and a good thing to do ....but when one of the Elders heard about it he made a fuss and even stated from the stage how this was NOT how things should be done . Only families should study together . (At that time I didn't know anything about Ray Franz and what happened at Bethel ,but obviously the Elders did .)

Then a few yrs. later many of the sisters were having Home Interior parties ,and some of the sisters that did not have the means to buy things were feeling left out. I suggested we have small tea parties ,and just share service experiences ,and the day text together . Once again it was shot down as not an Elder approved gathering .....wtf ...... So really I started out as a spiritual wannabe ,but the witnesses beat it out of me :)
