Actually, the WTS teaches that jws started with Abel.
*** w05 2/15 p. 16 par. 17 Christians—Be Proud of Who You Are! ***Throughout history, there has been a succession of witnesses of Jehovah. It extends from the faithful man Abel—about 60 centuries ago—to the "great crowd" of modern Witnesses and on to throngs of worshipers of Jehovah who will enjoy an endless future. (Revelation 7:9; Hebrews 11:4)
*** wt chap. 9 p. 86 par. 12 The Power of the Resurrection Hope ***Also resurrected to earthly life will be Abel, the first faithful witness of Jehovah
Thank you, Blondie.
Although they appear to claim (in above quote) that Jehovah Witnesss began with Abel, isn't there some mention of an actual formation of a group at a certain period in time?
Do they claim they are "most like" the first century christians, or do they claim that the actual formation of the organizational structure began at that time?
What action or doctrine most defines their similarity with first century christians?
Thank you.
and I would like to see the progression of the 1st century "FDS" feeding the next generation. Exactly who was it in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th centuries?
Assuming my memory of JW dogma is correct....as Blondie said, it "started" with Abel, not Adam with no formation of a group...or was that with Russell?
Modern day religions like the JWs and Mormons are fixated on connecting themselves to the early Christians in some way, in order to establish their authority and divine commission as God's church or organization ... they want what Rome, Constantinople, Antioch, and Alexandria already have, but without the true historical development. They can never have it ... so they twist history to try and invent it ... but they come out losers as we have all witnessed.
cameo, it's just semantics. As a JW, we were taught that the first one that was a true "witness" for Jehovah was Abel because he worshipped God the proper way. I recall something about these witnesses for Jehovah being first organized into a solidified group at Pentecost and from there on out, there were always true Christians worshipping Jehovah simply and with his spiritual blessing in small groups. Then in the 1800's He began gathering them together under a larger umbrella that would finally be given the official name Jehovah's Witnesses in the 1930's ('35?) by Judge Rutherford. This is how I was taught.
If there is a deeper invisible esoteric meaning behind all of this, the r&f are not made aware of it. They just follow what they are told to do, given pats on the back for their hours of service and number of literature placements, and sit with robotic stares through meetings being told whatever the Society wants them to hear.
What Blondie and Journey-on said.
IMO, the WT twists and pulls stories out of several arses in order to appear as if they are the only true religion. They put out so many stories, that it can be hard to keep up with. For example, they say the first "witness" was Abel. Ok. But then they teach that there's only been one "true organization" on earth that Jehovah has used. Ok. But then they also say that Jehovah is using a "faithful and discreet slave" class of people to feed the sheeple. Soo... which is it?? It's all three of them!
I have a headache...
Since there is no record in the NT of the word Jehovah being used there can't have been Jehovah's Witnesses. Instead Jesus said in Acts 1:8 that the early disciples would be "witnesses of me". Likewise Revelation 17:6 "…the witnesses of Jesus."
If you go to http://www.jwfacts.com/index_files/slave.htm and scroll down to the heading "SINCE JESUS" it examines the groups that the Watchtower has referred to as being potential Witnesses over the last 2000 years. Not a single one of these groups comes close to being like Witnessess. They may be similar in two or three doctrine at most, but generally held to many doctrine and practices highly offensive to JWs today.
'If you can't make it then fake it', I guess that is the motto of every small fish that wants to look big and important. If you don't have substance then put on lots of makeup powder (smokescreen). Such is not only the case with JW but with many other small groups even quasi-religious one such as Freemasons who claim lineage all the way to pyramid builders. Direct link between those of course is as good as between me and King Arthur, but hey as long as someone is eager to believe in something people will keep inventing stories.
