Use Windows Defender for a firewall and Avast for Anti-virus. It works, it's free and it uses very little resources. Beyond that, hit ctrl, alt and delete and learn your processes. Once in a while do it again. When something unfamiliar is there, research it.
Should I renew my Norton subscription?

Use Windows Defender for a firewall ....
Windows Defender is not a firewall; it's an antispyware product. While it is good, I would recommend disabling it if you install Norton Antivirus 2009 as it has its own spyware protection.
Firewall protection is handled by the operating system itself, assuming you are using XP or newer.

Going out to the Internet without security is like having sex with no condom. You're going to get infected -- it's just a question of time. With the Internet, it's usually seconds.
Bull crap. A better analogy is taking antibiotics and tetanus shots 24/7 in case you get a scrape and a resulting infection. Preventative habits are much more conducive to good health than buying computer lagging programs willy nilly.
