Wow! I had no idea there were so many of us in the same boat! We all come across as reasonably competent, but, as Lee indicates, who's watching for mistakes?
Thanks for the encouragement and tips!

I can't imagine not being able to type.
coco I used to type 100+ page papers for school using just two fingers
I learned how to type in high school back in, I hate to say 1964, and will always be thankful for my teacher Margaret Kuhn, who also taught me shorthand which came in handy with one of my first jobs as a secretary in an office where I was the only one who could take shorthand. The best advice has already been given--practice,practice,practice. You can do it!
CoCo! You write all of those wonderful tips and quips and stories without knowing how to type?!
Well Journey is right... learn the proper finger placement... not only the placement, but also WHICH finger goes up or down to WHICH other keys. Here ya go... this shows the proper placement and it looks like it might be fun:

Once you have done that and know the placement well... try a typing game or two to increase your speed:

(Baba disclaimer: I have not tried either of these, but they both looked safe and helpful from my end. Be sure to have your pop-up blockers on, just in case.)
Thanks everyone for your tips, encouragement and lynx [dear Baba!] Yes ... practice, practice and more practice! I've spent a few hours today with lazy brown dogs and hurtling rusty foxes [actually, only one of each].

An example of today's output:
I want to become proficient at typing. It will only happen with considerable practice, however. I want to learn how to type. I want to learn how to type. I must discipline myself to spend more time doing this. I want to become good at whatever I set my hands at doing. Do you feel the same as I do? I hope so because in agreeing with me there will be peace! I so want us to be friends. But good fences, they say, make good neighbors. If I had my way you would do my bidding and seek all that pleases me. You may not agree with that but since when are you ever right about anything? The only way to become good at this is more and more practice ... more and more practice ... more and more practice. Enough already! Enough already ... If I spent some time everyday at this I'd eventually become so good that I'd astound everyone, except myself, of course, as I've never doubted for a moment my potential. Just keep chipping away, chipping away, chipping away.
I practiced a lot on Mavis Beacon software when I learned to type. I also took typing in the 7th grade--we used ibm selectrix typewriters.
Here's a free download of the Mavis Beacon software.

Note that I haven't downloaded this version myself and verified that it's spyware/malicious code free.
Thanx, J.D.
There's certainly lots of help here!
Gratefully,

Get an old cheap keyboard and put whiteout on the keys then play typing games! It will drive you batshit at first but you will be AMAZED how fast you learn to type. I never look at the keyboard and I can get up in the 50ish words a minute range if I really concentrate!
One of the other tricks is to NEVER take your fingers off the home row keys get those little bumps under your index or pointer fingers (depends on the keyboard) and LEAVE THEM THERE!

So that's what they're for!
Many thanks, mkr!
