If the WTBTS took 1934 as the new date they could even bring back in the 'generation' teaching.

Not with only 5 years left for the end of 80 years. They took damage with the first generational change. If they change 1914 to 1934, they'll lose more people. If they change back to the original generation teaching too, they'll lose even more. Then, with these changes fresh in their minds, if they drop the generation teaching again 5 years from now and go back to the way it is now, even more people will call BS.

It's too risky for the potential gain to be had from alarming people all over again.

Isaac, The "prophetic year" (a WT invention) is 360 days long,so 7 times 360 gives 2520. But to get from 607bc, when nothing happened ,to 1914 the 2520 years would have to be 365.25 days long, or you would end up 37.75 years short of 1914.

Karumba, aint this stuff so plain to see from scripture?

I don't think that most JW's really understand the JW chronology, as mentioned.
With the current attitude to discourage questioning anything they say and to discourage outside research, all they have to do is say that outside research is wrong, apostates are taking the unknown and lying about it, "We always rely on the Bible chronology when no proof is available" and we do that magic working backwards from 537 BCE to prove it's right.

They swear that events in 1914 and beyond prove that they are right, that's the end of it as far as JW's are concerned.

    I love the 360 day - 365.25 day thing.

So you are telling me that Jehovah set up the prophecy to include the Jewish year (360 days) for the 2520 calculation even though he created the planet earth to have a 365.25 day year.

He went with what mans definition of a year was at the time.

Most JWs believe what they do because the WT uses manipulation and mind control techniques on them. The WT could tell them that the moon was made of green cheese and they would believe it. Anyone remember the CO who used to hold up his black bible at CAs and say, "if the FDS told me this bible was white, I'd say it was white"?

I think if confronted with proof the society was wrong many would say, "The brothers know more than we do about this. Even though it looks to me like they are wrong, they have people studying this back in Brooklyn who have it all figured out and would be able to explain why they are right."

Ahh, but the Jews had a luni-solar year - their lunar years had to synch with the solar years anyway - intercalaries etc. But Leolaia did a post ages ago explaining how it still doesn't work. I'll have to hunt it down ...

Do you know what most people hated about studying the Daniel and Isaiah books? The History. They couldn't care less when Jerusalem was destroyed. As long as that is the case, then it is a non issue for the GB. There will never be a big news scandal ect. about this because nobody that isn't a JW disputes that is was 586/587. Ever looked at how many dates had to be altered in the insight books for them to stick with 607? It's crazy. Battle of Carchemish, the reign of Pharoah Necho, ascension of Nebuchadnezzar, I know there's more. Fact remains, nobody cares about any of that. The disclamier in the appendix of the Kingdom come book still stands. "until new information comes to light, we will trust in 'bible chronology'" as if that is somehow an explanation. ofo

Very, very interesting topic. I wish that my friends and family would at least look at this. Don't think they will for awhile though. I remember this one brother told me he was researching on the Internet for a talk on Daniel. He said only the Society used 607 B.C.E. Then a couple of months later I asked him about that, and he said, "I never said that."
