They've done similar fly overs for photo shoots over other national landmarks, like Mount Rushmore. No conspiracy here I think.
I think it was handled badly by the people who set the whole thing up. Why not inform the mayor and even the population that the AF1 plane you'll be seeing flying low over the Statue is not carrying the prez or that nothing untowards is happening...
It was a bad idea even if more people were informed.

I dunno...if the city knew, the mayor knew, the NYPD knew, then what's the big deal? I know what the knee jerk reaction is, but I think a panic setting in because a plane is flying low is a bit over the top.
When the USAirways jet landed in the Hudson, I heard a few reports of people thinking 9/11 but I didn't hear of panic in the streets...and this plane got nowhere near as low as that commercial airliner did.

I suspect it was the sight of the fighter plane tailing the 747 that freaked people out, not the altitude.
Could be... I forgot about that part.
I agree, not informing the public was just plane stupid (pun intended)...
but if the public had been informed, I don't think it would have been that big of a deal.
Maybe they weren't informed because a wayward pilot went for a joyride??

EXCELLENT! Your profundity is by no means shallow ...
Whether or not the irony was intended, UC, thank you for avoiding the tiresome and unnecessary declaration of one's own cleverness, "Pun intended."

I don't see a problem. If I had been there to see it I'd been excited to know what was going on, but I wasn't at NYC during 9/11 so for the poor people that went through that a big noisy plane may aggravate them.

but yet, later in the thread I used that very phrase, so I think your applause was premature...
