Lady Lee
It is illegal here to keep your car running while pumping the gas
Like Grace said - very dangerous

I know it's illegal and you're not supposed to do it. I just wondered why.

I know there are signs up at the stations about that...prolly saying its illegal...but the print is small and who reads that stuff anyway?
What would you do if you were in the midst of pumping gas and someone came up next aisle over and did that?
Or you saw them smoking while pumping gas?
There are no attendants outside. And there's always the chance punks are gonna come around and do something stupid. What do you do?
And I am damn sure not going to get close enough to get a tag number!
This guy will probably do it again.

Hmm... I wonder if that truly is dangerous. I mean why would it be? You are adding fuel to the tank; combustion happens in the engine...far removed from the tank.
If you have a bad spark plug wire and it's arching, that could ignite the gas fumes.
It's the gas fumes that are dangerous. When I was about 12 years old, my friend and I had a little campfire going, and he had a gallon GLASS jug with gasoline in it, and he made a trail of gas quite far from the campfire, and he was going to light it, and while he was pouring the gas out, the kneck of the gas container caught on fire. He just dropped the jug. I don't know why the jug didn't explode, but if it would have, he would have been severely burned, and probably me too, as I wasn't that far from him. The glass would have cut us up bad, too, maybe killed us.

You really think gas fumes are going to migrate over to the engine bay while staying concentrated enough to explode? Seems like million to one longshot.

Okay, let's say you shut off your engine, and you are pumping gas, and this guy comes up right behind you, and keeps his engine running. You are close to his engine, right?
It doesn't have to be your engine.

Back in the old days the gas stations used to pump the gas for you and many of the attendants
would be smoking while they were pumping gas.
But that was when we used to ride bicycles without a helmet. Drive cars without seatbelts
or airbags. Wander all over town as children and not be kidnaped.
Gas was only 32cents a galon back then. It wasnt powerful enough to explode.
