Has anyone 'sync'ed your TV with your PC and dropped cable?

There are tons of tv/movie programming - not to mention other more educational tools - on the web that could quickly replace the poor habit of channel surfing and potato-couching for family entertainment.

Just wondering if anyone has done this? How difficult to do? Has it worked out?

I didn't sync up my TV with my PC but I did rely on my laptop for TV for almost for 2 years.

Here is link to my old thread on the subject: http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/social/entertainment/146454/1/Internet-TV

Worked out pretty well for me and I didn't feel I missed too much. The networks don't put the shows on the net until about a day after initial broadcast but important news events can be seen live (ie: election debates, etc.)

Since TimeWarner keeps raising their rates, I may consider sync'ing so I'll check back and see how it works for you!

I already watch some shows on the internet. My wife and I like Survivor, and my work schedule does not allow me to see it, so we watch it later on my monitor - which is not too bad - 22" flatscreen. I have considered just mounting a larger TV above my desk instead of a monitor and then we could just gather to watch it there - but it is not too comfortable that way. But the current TV is just 20 feet away and could be linked with an ethernet cable easily if it were compatible.

Of course there is the expense of a larger tv - which would be fairly quickly dissapated with time. We have reduced our cable to the minimum service as far as TV portion goes. We have the internet bundle including phone. If I dropped the phone and went to that 'majic jack' phone that they advertise, we could cut out quite a bit of expense and still keep high-speed internet.

I am thinking seriously of doing it - just haven't decided yet.

Our phone company rates were so high here , we dropped the phone & internet, then added cable with internet and phones through internet & saved 100.$ a month! The least expensive choice may depend on where you live.

Why do you need to buy a bigger TV, Jeff?

We did it. It's easy..very easy. We have no dish/no cable....we get to watch what we want on our time. Your TV must have a VGA connector and you will need to get a VGA splitter for your computer....if you need help just pm me....

Oooh, I want to do this too! I'm very interested in the responses.

I have Dish, and a bundle with AT&T. But it is ridiculously expensive. I rarely use the home phone...I had some responses on the Magic Jack, and also I read about "oona", a phone/internet device you can buy at Costco.

I think I am scared to make the wrong move.

Only fools purchase cable tv. Why anyone will spend a minimum of $40 bucks a month for programming that is 1/3 advertising is beyond me.

Dagney - we only use magic jack. It's on the computer and you can forward all of your calls to your cell phone or other phone if you want. It comes with voice mail that is also linked to your email address. In other words, a voice mail will be sent to your email so that when you open it, you can hear the message. It also has a contact list. You can call long distance for free - I call and speak to my sisters in Canada for hours and it costs nothing. I highly recommend magic jack - eliminate the long distance carrier and fees...plus it's portable. If you move or travel with a computer, just plug in the magic jack and it's back up and running. No more phone lines to disconnect and reconnect..it's great!

We got rid of our Dish - we don't have cable..we have basic service on whatever stations the locals give us and then we watch everything else through the internet. We also subscribe to Graboid because we use it for some series that I couldn't get here in the USA anyway...

Nah, I do watch streaming video (Netflix, Hulu, etc) but it is still not as good as real HDTV recorded on a DVR. We use cable for TV, phone, and Internet. Our bill is up there but we get top notch service on all three.
