What I can't find is service to Canadian area codes

I'm going to be looking into magic jack for my sister who lives in Ontario..it would be a major save for her since she's rural and every single call is long distance. sammieswife.

I have an old Apple Powermac G4 that is hooked to the TV.

I loaded the Powermac with hard drives (2 TB worth), got an long HDMI cable (from newegg, don't go to best buy!), and a small DVI to HDMI converter plug. Audio from the computer is hooked to a stereo.

The TV now functioned as a dual monitor for the PC. I like to use VLC to watch movies and other things I download. For movies it is excellent. I still get basic cable (thinking of just going with the free over the air digital signal).

In the end I have basic cable, netflix, and my computer. I've digitized many of my dvd's so they are right on the computer (and shamefully admit that I copy a netflix movie when I feel like sending it back and watching it at my leisure )

Joost is pretty cool as well! But it doesn't run on a G4. It will run on my intel macbook pro

I have AT&T for my landline...too paranoid to let AT&T switch me over to their VoIP phone service. I have AT&T Uverse instead of cable for my HD tv service and internet. Which is ironic since I am a contractor for the cable company. Why would I want that trouble in my personal life along with my work life?

I have a HD TV... but it is an older 32" tube not flat screen. Damn thing weighs 135 pounds. Almost as much as I weigh. Had to roll it into the house end over end.

I love the DVR..I can record up to 4 digital feeds (or 2 HD feeds) at the same time...25 hours of HD or 100 hours of regular digital on the DVR. I have channels I can customize for weather, sports, etc. right down to my zip code. I can set my DVR from anywhere I have access to the internet if I forget to set it at home. I dont have premium movie channels and dont use pay per view. I watch just enough on the non over the air channels to make it worth keeping. I almost never go to the movies and rarely rent them.

If you have good coverage, you can drop cable/telco internet and get a USB data modem through your cell company and plug it into your laptop or desktop for internet service.

For international long distance, I have a virtual calling card called MobileCaller.com. Call a local 800# and you can call most countries fairly cheap. I keep $10 or so loaded just in case..and it automatically reloads if I drop below that. Havent used it in a couple of years now, but the balance is still there.

Only fools purchase cable tv. Why anyone will spend a minimum of $40 bucks a month for programming that is 1/3 advertising is beyond me.

Agreed. I have three words for you Free To Air. You can buy an FTA receiver for 100 bucks and get ALL programing for free.

Is Free to Air any different than the converter boxes you buy at Wal-mart? Do free to air converters just bring in the locally broadcast stations?

You do need a dish. Anyone know what kind of dish is required? I have a disconnected DISH network dish still on my roof. Can that be used with FTA?
