@ steve = "Well, whether or not they are rumors, the internet is the perfect medium for turning them into "truth". Take one cup of wishful thinking...."

If the internet had been about in the 1980s, how many cups of wishful thinking would you have needed then?

    Enjoy your snooze.

To Steve's point, let's not forget the recent pioneer hour reduction rumor that went around the globe and back and never materialized. The same goes for the elimination of CO's rumor. Sometimes there is some credibility to the rumors (such as the elimination of the book study rumor), but sometimes it's nothing more than simple conjecture.

A moderate dose of skepticism is healthy when dealing with rumors.

Yes, good point. I heard rumours in the local congregation about one of the governing body rebeling in the early 1980s. I must say I hoped at the time that the rumours were true but for several months did not know for sure. When the evidence arrived (e.g. article in Time magazine, and subsequent firsthand contact with Ray), I was absolutely delighted.

In the meantime, more than 25 years later, the ease with which any type of rumour spreads on the internet is astonishing; the preference that - sooner or later - there be some evidence is not the result of snoozing, but being in a more alert state of consciousness.

BTW, I do enjoy reading your posts - although we have clashed over a few points, more often than not, I find your posts well though through.

@ steve - I enjoy your posts too, but I'm not going to agree with you on certain topics, so I'll challenge you on them as I expect you to challenge me on mine.

Absolutely - that's what I like about many of your posts and with JWN in general.

Sometimes, however, I think you also use sarcasm to make your point - which is fine, except that when you have done so in response to at least some of my posts, you seem to have assumed I hold a position that I don't.

For example, in my earlier comments about wishful thinking and rumours I wasn't implying that there is nothing in rumours so we shouldn't bother with them. Instead, I was wanting a bit more rigor in looking for evidence to support them. Your comment invitng me to enjoy the snooze, whilst admittedly humorous, implied I was perhaps content to just ignore rumours which is far from the truth of my position. I am open to seeing if there is any substance about the rumours on some elders in the Chicago area.
