Thank you, dear Baba, for your kind and heartfelt sentiments. I do very much feel the love here and am most grateful for it.

I identify a bit but not totally with Mr. Holland, whose achievements were not negligible, yet he failed initially to see what was truly important - family, teaching, his students' affection ... I do see and appreciate those things, but I have been on stage [both literally and figuratively] most of my life and there is this yearning for more.

    You are correct: artistic temperament!

    Much love,

    CoCo

Ahhhh....but what happened September 23rd? You have permission to wrap the answer in obfuscation, allegory and metaphor. But what happened????

    Dear Bizzy Bee:

The words below, written 23 September, bespeak of the real-life occurrence of unsettling doubts and mind-numbing reality of personal decay that did truly rattle "Lance's" cage of domesticity and putatively settled life. He writes a household hints column [to which you have written] yet cannot successfully order his own estimable life ... Autumn has sunk her talons into his life, his heart, his bliss ...

    23 September 2008

It irritated Lance no end that he was unable to right the wrongs of his exterior world. No, nothing of genuine, life-defining importance, like improving interpersonal relationships or getting the local economy once again to smile favorably upon his near-busted checking account. His annoyance settled more directly and immediately upon his present inability to arise from his sick bed and straighten up the joint. To an outsider's eye, his home was appointed with the most impeccable taste. The property was lavish with verdure and shadow that played gorgeously against his elegant though modest wood-shingled bungalow. Not so much as an irresponsibly arranged vase of flowers within nor unraked leaves without should ever accost the observant visitor's eyes as a decorator's faux pas or the gardener's daily task left undone.

When I'm good, I'm very good, but when I'm bad I'm better! I just know my way around the joint, that's all.

BTW, all my stories - short-shorts, short and mere snippets - go through my e-mail account for spell-check and as a back-up file. On 23 September, I - "Lance" - must have been under the weather and decrying and bemoaning the state of my pied-a-terre and otherwise perfect but misaligned cross-hatching of raked garden gravel.

Which, of course, led to my descent into autumnal, mental-suicide mode.

    Love,

CoCo, Lance, Happy Homemaker, Sassy Stuart, ad infinitum, ad nauseum ...
