I remember my mother trying to get us to play other games instead of chess but not being too successful. Despite the negative aspects of the article there wasn't anything directly prohibiting and only she got nervous about it. The rest of the family enjoyed it. She did break off the crosses on top of the kings, however.

when the book study met in our home,
one on-again/off-again elder who passed
through (we had at least 4 different ones
in 10 years) was a little rooster....
probably why he was in a revolving
door of appointment and deletion....part of the home schooling i did with my kids
(something we had done prior to drinking
the kool-aid) included learning how to play
chess... it was part of our first grade curriculum!!this bozo elder, on one of his first nights as
the study conductor, upon seeing the chess
board set up (nice mexican carved stone pieces!)
tells me that this game is based on violence and
is unacceptable in a book study home!!! WTH??i did acquiese and put the pieces away for BS....
bet the "Stratego " game would have chapped his @ss

Oh yeah, stratego. If you played outside and the sun was on your opponents side you could see through the peices.
Also played Risk, and Axis & Allies. I guess I had more free reign with games since they were educational or something. But squirt guns... only buck rogers style squirtguns for me! Oh, D&D and Dark Tower were no-nos. Oh, how I wanted that Dark Tower game, but it was demonic or something. It had so many buttons, and lights, and it beeped.

Yep, couldn't play chess. Bad game because of the war aspect and the Kings, Queens, etc. It would promote one feeling superior over the other. Ummm, yeah, I was going to feel superior with a piece of dark (or white) plastic. And, war, sheesh, don't get me started! Those rooks really make one feel manly.
Idiots. Complete, utter, idiots.
All board games were bad. Card games too. We pretty much had nothing. Bikes and balls.
Idiots. Complete, utter, idiots.
