It was a honey like substance that we put on aluminum foil.
My friend said they got it at Fred's many years ago,

Oh they realize it when it's too late and they are well within your house. When they look around inside at the "house of death", They try to run like crazy for the door. But it's too late. You see them first!

Diatomacious earth w crysanthemum powder. It kills them in minutes and is not poisonous. You can spread it under the baseboards or inside walls and leave it there. It sticks to them as they walk over it, then wears holes into their exoskeleton. Kinda like draining the oil and antifreeze from a car engine;)

A cheap remedy is boric acid powder....preferably blue boric acid powder that I haven't seen in many years. The white will do though!
Just make a line of powder (like cocaine snorters do) along the baseboards. The ants and other insects have to cross it to wherever they are going and it eventually kills them all. I learned this while working for the Orkin army.
They don't use because expensive chemicals that act faster bring in more money. That's understandable!

Believe it or not, I have used the vacuum cleaner in the past, they are dead in the vacuum bag.
