I don't see how this portion eliminates automatic citizenship upon birth on US soil... am I missing something?

Daniel-p, I thought I just read that you're only a citizen when you're born on this soil if your parent's status is a citizen of the US or a legal alien, lawfully admitted for permanent residence or to serve in the armed forces. I take this to mean that if you're here illegally and give birth, your child will no longer be automatically given citizenship.

    Am I missing something?

I think that is a good thing.

I really never understood this, even for Americans in other countries ---- just because your child was born in another country they are automatically a citizen of that country.

I take this to mean that if you're here illegally and give birth, your child will no longer be automatically given citizenship.

It's a major step in weeding out expenses as well as removing the legal entitlement that some use now for remaining in the country. The argument currently used is that if you have a baby it is an automatic citizen and therefore, as a society, how can you deport one of your own citizens without it's mother, even if that mother is illegal? This will remove that right and all will be deported as illegal.

I believe it is also another step toward streamlining the medical and education system, and possibly the voting system. sammieswife.

The article states that the 14th Amendment was originally intended to settle the status of former slaves.

Quote: "I don’t think anybody could logically argue then that (its writers knew) that we would see a time where 1 out of every 10 births in this country is to an illegal immigrant."

This bill restores a smidgen of faith in Washington. I hope that it becomes law. I wonder how it will work if one parent is legal and the other is not.
