I am on the fence here....

In theory I like the concept as my state is suffering over illegal healthcare, education, and jobs.

However the place of birth being your national identity is so historically founded that I am hesitant to alter the tradition of entitlement. I would be happy to see a citizenship not applicapable until the person is 18, thus to be raised by their parents in the parent's native country and being given a choice of assuming one final citizenship upon becoming a legal adult by US standards (we could DNA type the infant before they were deported with their parents for future confirmation of identity).

Here is a thought why not just enforce the laws we already have and if any alteration is needed then speed up the deportation process and consider upping fines toward individual violators (resulting in imprisonment if caught again on US soil illegally and not being able to re-enter legally until those fines are paid) as well as fines to the country of origin.

I think that finally the economic reality of the US being almost bankrupt has caught up and that might be driving the changes - taxes will be raised at a time when unemployment is expected to double soon, schools are laying off teachers because there is no money, the prisons are overflowing and hospitals are closing. I just think that people are being squeezed and so all the issues have to be put on the table in order to save money. The list of state parks that are expected to close in California is in the news and there is a lot of grumbling from suggestions that the state might be selling off assets to foreign entities in order to survive. Counties are surviving on decreased revenues, reducing services and increasing property taxes on those that are left. Something's gotta blow and I think this is just the beginning of trying to clean up a big mess.....sammieswife.

The more I think about this, the more I like it. Taxes and money aside, slipping into the country illegally so that you can have a baby, then draw bennies, just seems wrong to me.

I think I like it too.

California is about to abolish welfare, and close down all of our state parks.

GOOD!! We pay enough in taxes . I do not want to pay for an illegal's child to go to school or for thier health care. In my area they hire teachers who can speak duel language, spanish and english. They have "special classes" for all the shildren who only speak spanish. Iam not bashing any culture. The bottom line if you are not here legally then YOU BROKE THE LAW and you should not be treated to all the perks a citizen gets. Ans for those who say do not take it out on the children, take that to the parents of the ones who choose to have these kids. It is not my responsability to take care of ones who break the law.

I really hate to see us lose our "safety nets," but there has been a lot of abuse by citizens as well as non citizens. Someone has to pay.

While I agree Watson...you cannot possibly know the real cost of your social programs until you eliminate the real cost of services to the illegal communities. That is a reality. In general, the number of people in any given country that actually abuse a social program, is negligible - stats year in and out provide that data - you have more corruption and abuse these days that is costing you more at the corporate level on Wall Street than you do in people receiving welfare. Regardless, until you clean up one mess, you cannot address the other...and in California that's what it is - a huge mess. If we get a bail out, everybody in the USA will pay for it through increased taxes - so it's in the best interests to start this thing somewhere and then move forward. sammieswife.
