Double-standards?

How is it that a woman can look at another woman and say, "Wow! She's beautiful/sexy/gorgeous/pretty!" and nobody thinks a thing about it. But when a man looks at another man and says, "Wow! He's gorgeous/sexy/handsome/good-looking!" everyone will look at him funny?

Why is it when a black/Oriental man is proud of his color and ancestry it's considered national pride, but when a white man is proud of his color and ancestry it's considered racist?

Why is it when a woman gets a divorce she's considered a "divorcee", but when a man gets divorced he goes back to being a "bachelor"?

Just some things I've been thinking about lately...

Interesting thought...as for white people, they can say, I'm proud to have an Irish heritage or a Russian heritage, but never, 'I'm proud to be white."

    I don't know why myself.

As for men, I say, "he's a good looking fellow, but then again, I'm married, and an honest opinion isn't terrible. Perhaps just insecure guys worry about it.

    Hi Andi,

The answer to the first two, I believe, have to do with superiority issues. Culturally women have always been seen as weaker, as objects. Also, a woman looking with lust and/or admiration of another woman is "raising" herself culturally by taking on the aspects of a man. However a man looking at a man with lust and/or admiration is "lowering" himself by taking on the aspects of a woman. Add to that the thought of a man submitting sexually to another man and you add a whole other dimension of terror. I don't see these cultural aspects changing much. They are dug in deep.

I think the fact that whites have so long been the dominant culture in the west and the fact that they have stomped all over other cultures getting there keeps the area of them being proud of their race a sensitive area whereas the other races are culturally seen, again in the west, as still being up and coming.

    Just my simplistic thoughts.

Oh the white man is evil, been told that since I was a kid. I suppose we're going to have to live down that "slavemaster" thing for a few more centuries.

I grew up in a ghetto in San Francisco. I sure didn't feel like anyone's master there. I felt a lot more like a punching bag.

They used to call a divorced woman a "gay divorcee". When I was divorced I referred to myself as "second hand single".

Not sure if all of these are double standards. Let me see.

"How is it that a woman can look at another woman and say, "Wow! She's beautiful/sexy/gorgeous/pretty!" and nobody thinks a thing about it. But when a man looks at another man and says, "Wow! He's gorgeous/sexy/handsome/good-looking!" everyone will look at him funny?"
Well, I've never had any qualms about saying if I thought a man or a woman fit the above descriptions (I'm a guy, by the way. And straight.). I also could give a hoot if someone thought I was gay because I thought another guy was good looking. don't we all appreciate beauty? When I see a guy that I think is particularly good looking or sexy or charismatic, I also may find myself studying him to see what it is that sets him apart from other men. I find at times that it is not always the looks. Same with a really sexy woman. Interesting looks with a certain air or attitude is a remarkable combination. And I don't mean arrogant - which is a total turnoff. Confident and friendly are a deadly combination. Add intelligence and humor and you have the ultimate weapon.

"Why is it when a black/Oriental man is proud of his color and ancestry it's considered national pride, but when a white man is proud of his color and ancestry it's considered racist?" There is some truth to this - but I think it's part of the culture right now. No easy answers on that one.

"Why is it when a woman gets a divorce she's considered a "divorcee", but when a man gets divorced he goes back to being a "bachelor"?" Sorry, I've never thought in those terms. Divorced or married applies equally to men or women, from what I've seen. I almost never hear anyone referred to as a bachelor anymore. Ever. And NEVER hear the word divorcee. Single is the word I hear, and again used for either sex.
