Is PC "Free" Registry Cleaner Really Free?

Greetings Potentially Frustrated Non-Savvy Computer Owners:

I've been doing a lot of reading on the whys and wherefores of the necessity of cleaning one's PC registry. Many products online are graded as to their effectiveness, covering an entire range of results of what is good, bad and in between. Some spokespersons say that you should never have to pay for registry repair. The scan, of course, is free. Individual scans by different companies show non-identical results.

My question: all so-called repairs, clean-ups - whatever - that I've researched offer FREE clean-up, but then stop the procedure and ask you to pay a minimum of $29.99 USD [credit card, personal information, etc.] before the FREE work can proceed.

Am I missing something here? Should I simply take my PC to a live computer geek and allow him/her to do the work?

Thanks for anything you might share.

There are indeed some free ones along with the annoying mis-represented scam ones, Dear CoCo.

If you are just looking to clear out your cookies and cache, etc., a good one is C-Cleaner (formerly crap cleaner, haha.)

They do ask for a donation, but that is optional. I have used it several years very successfully.

Be sure you know your automatic passwords, it wipes those out, too!

These are features per their site:

    Program Summary:

CCleaner is a freeware PC optimization tool.
It combines a system cleaner that removes unused and temporary files from your system and also a fully featured registry cleaner!
CCleaner allows Windows to run faster, more efficiently and gives you more hard disk space.
The best part is that it's Small, Fast and Free!

Coco..You have to be carefull with things that are advertised as free..

Personally I prefer to buy a top notch registry cleaner from a computer shop..That way you know what your getting..

I use and recommend "ioloSystem Mechanic"..You can program it to work automaticly whenever a problem pops up..

That way your computer is never down..

    Dear Baba and OUTLAW:

So much, so soon, so helpful! I really appreciate your steering me in the right direction.

    Let the "buyer" beware!

    Gratefully,

    CoCo On Track

PS Baba: will it wipe out Favorites, too?

Outlaw beat me to it. I really like system mechanic. It isn't free (I'm paying 4.99 a month) but I don't trust the free ones. I downloaded one once and it was worse than the problem it was supposed to fix. There is a site called Kim Kommando that is sort of a "car talk" for computers. Her recommendations are good, its where I got system mechanic.

CoCo..You can buy "iolo System Mechanic" out right..Just go to a computer store and buy the soft ware..I think mine cost me under $50.00....You can up grade every year or not..The soft ware you buy will always be usable..Even if out of date the following year..

I have it installed in my kids computers as well..Set on automatic..

That way I don`t have to be there to fix a problem..The computer does it automaticly..

CoCo asked: PS Baba: will it wipe out Favorites, too?

Nope, favorites are safe... (you mean favorites as in "bookmarked" websites, right?) They are safely stored on your internet browser, CCleaner does not remove them.
