Even though they encourage magazine placement with the special campaigns, many witnesses just distribute the tracts. So even though the tracts are cheaper than books, brochures, etc, the magazines get stockpiled by the publishers. What a waste of the WTBS resources just to get the young, new, and inactive into the field service.
"Special" campaigns a cause of JW malaise?

Special campaigns mean "dump and go" without having to talk to anyone and so the result is people will do that because they can finally count some time, feel reasonably good about "doing Jehovahs works" and turn in some time. It DOESNT MATTER that the damn things are useless. They serve the purpose of keeping the R&F doing busy work.
It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out that going door to door is a USELESS AND UNFRUITFUL ACTIVITY which stopped being effective probably 80 years ago.

From another insiders perspective, this is another dumb idea and shows how out of touch Brooklyn is - to expect strangers to make time to attend a talk when they are not even interested to read a copy of the latest magazine at their leisure gives you an indication about how much of a waste of time these "special campaigns" are.

First, that is a good way to make sure they at least heard the message, so they can get destroyed if Armageddon does come (they can't say that they never heard the message). Hence, I would classify it as murder, not as saving lives. That is the main reason they do this--at least, most publishers see it as at least getting the message out.
True, wastes of paper that invite people to a function are bound to flop--that would create problems if people actually did show up (especially someone armed with a good video camera and YouTube). But they also have waste of paper drives that specifically warn of the end of the system of things, and that are supposed to lead to a study (they almost never do). They have those drives so that they can get people to pio-sneer (they are harping that people need to get out as much as they possibly can, and then some, during these drives). The ones that straddle two different months are designed to inflate the publisher numbers, since they hound borderline active and borderline ready to become unbaptized publishers to start field circus during one of these months. And, if they straddle months, you have the same inflated publisher records during both months.

Emergency broadcast messages. News Alerts. Last chance sales. Closeout sales. Special announcements. Special campaigns. Fire drills.
After a while they are just hokey. No one pays attention and they just interrupt your tv, reading or music/talk shows.

I noticed at the two DCs I have been dragged to have had a lot of empty seats. If you were to squish everyone together a third or more of the rented facility would be empty.
Hi Yknot.
about a decade I go IIRC, we had these DO's come around Bro. Hurd an Bro. Bartell (sp?)
The idea they seem to have had was to close off sections of the Circuit Assembly Hall or District
Convention Arena, cordoned off actually. Everyone had to mush in and if you were a family of five
lets say and you came in right before things got started, you were hunting and searching for
a seat here and a seat there for yourself, your mate and kids.
Some parents refused to be seated elsewhere once they found out after the first day that
closed off sections would be opened if it seemed that more seats were needed so many
families just waited at the hallway doors until their chosen section was opened. It was a
fiasco.
The poor attendants had a rebellion in their hands, meanwhile the Administration/Chairman's
Office people fot the Convention are going around saying how nice it is to be maximizing the
space and blah blah.
Sorry I got off topic but this brought bad memories up as a kid.

Great insights above. I would only add that one should also recognize the appeal of asceticism to many 'spiritually motivated' people. Pushing oneself out into field service where they get doors slammed in their face may be an ascetic 'high' to many. Self righteousness can be addictive.
