I have never seen a group of people that want the world to be destoyed so much!! Can't believe I actually thought it made sense. I predict "New Light" or a new understanding of what the Great Tribulation is, or for that matter the meaning of when Armageddon starts. They have to keep their members thinking that their world is ending. You only get one life and you should be able to live it!!!

I remember as a 9 year old kid lying in bed and discussing this one night with my brother.

There was no way 1980 could come and go without Armageddon happening - it was all so clear cut.

    >> 30 Years and still no Big A - our mission now is to make the 9 year old JW children more clueful than I was - perhaps then they will only lose their childhood instead of their education prospects and their young adult life.

    Boy, I agree.

I did tell my JW gf last week when talking about another sister, "...can you imagine, praying for this system to end and bring the destruction of 6 billion people!"

She looked at me like she never thought of that before. Well it's about damn time she did.

Its funny, of the JW's that I know:

3 have bought new homes, all bigger than their previous.

1 is renovating their existing home.

1 has plans to by a home in a forgien country to work on the beach.

Things cant possibly get any worse they say...

Wait for it... because, they most certainly can.

All of whom are disobeying Watchtower mandates to "simplify their lives"!

Good for them, I say. That's likely to be the modus operandi for younger relatively wealthy JWs - treat the religion as a social club while getting on with life.

But I daresay the majority of JWs, looking at the organization as a whole, are not able to do those things.

There are very few of the career JWs amongst the younger r&f. Most I know both work fulltime and are busy beuilding their futures and families in this system. It's the older ones I feel sorry for. Those aged 60+ who gave their best years to the borg, the internet came too late for them.

SIR 82- Excellent thread . I discussed this with my 82 year old witness mom who has been a JW since 1951 several months ago. In a non-threatening polite way I asked her, " Mom - Did you feel you would ever make it into your 80's in this system of things , or did you feel the paradise would be here by now ? " She paused for a moment and said, " No, I never thought I'd be in my 80's in this system of things. I thought we'd be in paradise by now. " I told her , " I know how you feel . " Then I continued, " I remember being 16 years old in 1975 and other witnesses telling me Mr. Flipper you are so blessed ! You won't have to raise your children in this old system ! You can get married and have children in the paradise ! " Then I added to my mom, " Well mom, here I am it's 2009 and I have a 24 year old son, 22 and 20 year old daughters - and here we are ! Still here in this system ! " She said, " Yes, that's for sure ! Very true . " Then her cognizant dissenence set in a bit and she said, " Well we sure see a lot of things going on in the news still. "

So- I changed the subject , not wanting to cause her too much pain as she was still trying to justify in her mind we are in the alleged " last days". I just feel so sorry for her and all the rank and file witnesses that they are being lied to which in turn makes them waste valuable years of their lives that they COULD BE enjoying without the dark cloud of Armageddon hanging over them. Hopefully threads like this will help push some off the fence who are sitting on it waiting to exit the witnesses ! Good job Sir ! Peace out, Mr. Flipper

Great thread. It brings to mind Proverbs 13:12--"expectation postponed is making the heart sick."

Most of my JW acquaintances are more like those mentioned by "PSacramento" above--that is, they are young and materialistic. They are buying houses, going to college, having kids. In other words, these are the folks who are "tearing down their storehouses and building bigger ones." But if I suggest that The End isn't going to come in our lifetime, they get freaked out. If that isn't cognitive dissonance, I don't know what is!

I attended a JW assembly earlier this year and saw lots and lots of elderly folks. I guess I'm a softie, but I feel so sorry for them. I daresay not a single one of them expected to be hobbling around in 2009--rather they expected to be several decades into the New World. These folks were sold a bill of goods.

It will be interesting to see how this generation of JWs responds to getting old in this system. How long will the WTS be able to keep these folks motivated with the "End is Near" message. Eventually, they may get tired of the WTS "crying wolf." Or perhaps they will shrug it off because they have not invested as much in the WTS as previous generations.

I know a couple of elderly JWs who are about to outlive the meager retirement they had. The father has successfully alienated all his kids such that they never visit. They are sitting in a house packed up with so much junk it should be on a Clean House episode.

All they ever do is call into meetings and watch TV. Sitting around deteriorating waiting for Arm-a Geddon to get them outta here.
