Told ya it was funny. i would NEVER use the Bible on my sensitive tushy! Elsewhere, never stop learning. I got that from a commercial . I just wanna learn the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Homes, you'll enjoy "Who Wrote the Bible?". I just searched and found a thread from 5 years ago about that book; this is what I posted then:
I bought the book as a witness, thinking it would be interesting and faith building. I quickly put it down, lol.
After I read Crisis of Concience, I picked it back up again, as I wanted to know whether christianity had a basis before I invested more time and effort and heart into it - It doesn't and I didn't. Great book, saved me alot of time. It's funny to me, how many people, on leaving the witnesses, don't read a book that answers the most basic of questions, a question that they have never had answered as a witness, or even seen asked really, as a witness. Who wrote the Bible? Basic, vital, and crazy to proceed with religion till you have some sort of intelligent informed answer.

Is it really THAT different?
Yes, the same difference between night and day. The deception is very subtle in some instances but the implications are catastrophic.
Consider John 1:1 for example. The NWT adds a single letter word to the verse, "a" but the implication is huge i.e. that Jesus is not God but "a god".
If Jesus is one of many "gods" then he not so important and that is how the WT like it. They like to divert attention away from Him and onto themselves and "jehovah". That is not what the bible says John 12:32 John 14:6 Philippians 2:9 Acts 4:12
Anyhow, try it for yourself. Read the NIV or pretty much any version save the NWT. Now if you listen out for the Holy Spirit, He will soon teach you. Before you know it you will be homeschoooled for sure :)

My main suggestion is to kick the WT into touch and get a real teacher in place of the counterfeit 1 Corinthians 2:14

Nothing wrong with reading the bible - but perhaps find positive lessons you can speak over with your Jw sister instead of attacking it or trying to disprove stuff - make it a mutually beneficial exchange. Like that info on what it meant to throw a party on the day you are weaned - it's a great added extra you can throw into your conversation with your sister.

Can you see how frusterating this is (probably, you do 'cuz you've been in my shoes)? its like once I start reading one thing, there's always something else and something ELSE to read. its neverending. Its exhausting. Its overwhelming. I guess this go-round, I'm just going to read the NWT from Genesis to Revelation. And I can't wait for my new book to arrive in the mail. And, trust me Chalam, I am very tempted to do as you say & compare...if I can rustle up the energy, I most certainly will do it

Loubelle, I concur. Mentioning the weaning party thing kinda felt a little out of control, like we were both stating our opinions without empathizing with the other's thoughts....I was at fault too . I see what you're saying. I'm trying to pull out info from Steven Hassan's Releasing the Bonds & realize I've got to analyze the way our conversations are going & figure out what is going to raise questions in my loved one's mind.

Hello HS,
NIV-New International Version. Quite easy to read but not a million miles from the original hebrew and greek text.
If you want something tighter translation wise then try the ESV-English Standard Version.
Otherwise something even more modern and easier to read than the NIV then try the NCV-New Century Version.
You can find them all over here and plenty of other good ones BibleGateway.com: A searchable online Bible in over 100 versions ...
When you read it should give you energy! Sure, there is always something to learn about God, He is infinite but the Holy Spirit will not overload you or overwhelm you in a bad way. He knows exactly what you are ready to grasp and when. So ask for clarity of mind 2 Timothy 1:7 (I still like that verse from the King James, old skool-400 years old but still does the bizz, unlike the NWT). Remember, His burden is light, not heavy Matthew 11:30
