"And it was reported to me that some motels actually raised rates to the brothers giving no thought to possible consequences."

How exactly did they raise the rates for the brothers?

"Hi, our family would like to stay at you hotel. How much per night for a double?"

    "$100.00 per night."

"Did I mention that we'll be attending the Jehovah's Witness convention?"

"Oh, well in that case it's $150.00 per night."

Unlikely and illegal. The motels probably just raised their rates for everyone and stopped giving group discounts because they were losing money.

There is some great observations here....I just couldn't seem to figure out how to respond to the email my sis sent. Now I have a few ideas.

I am still pondering why she even sends this stuff to me. I got all sorts of assmbly footage (youtube stuff) from her from their last assembly too. If she is dreaming I might have a lightbulb moment and go running to my local KH with open arms, she can keep on dreaming. Just the mere fact that everyone has their 'best face forward' all the time makes my skin crawl. Someone mentioned earlier that here at JWN we do have a brotherhood....well said, and thank you. It's true. I'd feel as comfortable in a room with you all in it as I do behind my computer.

The germany and Hitler comment was great too!

Thanks for your insight and comments.

This whole thing sounds like a movie.

"They raised their rates giving no thought to the consequences...little did they know who they were dealing with!"

Amarillo Elder: "I don't know what to do, Watchtower. The economy is weak, it's weak. Anyway, if I had these lower convention rates, it puts us right back on top, you know. But these... these motel owners out here. They won't give it to me...Oh, Watchtower, I don't know what to do, I don't know what to do... "

WT Rep: "YOU CAN ACT LIKE A MAN!...I'm gonna make him an offer he won't refuse. Okay? I want you to leave it all to me. Go on, go back out in field service."

The Lord certainly does move in mysterious ways...

Joe Hober caused the economic crisis so the city of Amarillo would see the error of their ways and fall back in line in giving discounts on rooming for Joe's peeps when they come to town.

Screw the rest of the world...gotta teach those Texans a thing or two

$2000000 divided by 5000 people is $400 apiece.

It's high, but not impossible. Some spend up to $400 for the hotel for the family and somewhere between $5 and $30 for each meal for each person, then they fill up with gasoline once during the weekend.

Much commerce would be attributed to them even if it had nothing to do with them, especially if it could be determined that this much less was spent this year.

If they hit the Walmart for the Back-to-School sale, then that puts them over the top.

    Ick...

Who'd want to go to Amarillo four times a year ANYWAY?! Those Hoovers don't know how good they had it when it went down to once a year! (My sincerest apologies to those out there that DON'T think Amarillo is the armpit of Texas.... this is ONLY my humble opinion!)

Oops! My math was off! Yes, that's what happens when you make a post very early in the morning! lol!

Still, though, that leaves the question: 5000 heads of household or 5000 individuals including children and senior citizens? I can't imagine a family of four spending $1600 on a weekend at the District Assembly. This ain't Vegas!

Your sister keeps refering to the brotherhood - sounds super creepy. Hmmm perhaps you should phone said representative and find out if it is legit, so many of those hoaxes (even in the brotherhood) going around. I said brotherhood and cringed.

    AK Jeff,
I used to attend the DC in Amarillo with my parents back in the 80s. We used to make our annual Saturday night pilgrimage to the Big Texan for steaks.

Yep - the Big Texan was a favorite place of ours.

There was more entertainment on Amarillo Blvd though on a Friday night. We lived about 5 blocks off the Blvd for a while, and you could here the hookers yellin' at the cowboys as they drove thru town. One Jw brother slowed to a near stop as he turned the corner one night, and had a hooker jump in the car. Once, at the Shakey's Pizza following a TMS/SM, I was followed in the door by a cute hooker, who stood in line behind me as I ordered. My wife was already there, having rode with some other witnesses, and I turned around and asked her across the room what she wanted to drink. The hooker kind of cleared her throat and said, a little upset "Oh, well, I see you already have a date tonight" and strode out as quickly as she came in. LOL

The most lovely 'hooker' on the street was this cross-dresser who was truly gorgeous. We saw this particular one often standing on a particular corner there - then one day we heard 'her' cry out to a potential john across the street - in a man's voice. First time we knew she was a he.

Sorry to get off topic. Just a couple of 'Amarillo' memories popped up. Amarillo - a modern town that still thinks it is an 1860 cattle town.

"We feel you people should be placed in charge of the US government and in six months you would have the problems, including the economy fixed."

JWs are such suckers for blatant flattery.
