Yeah, wasn't professying in dreams done away with at the death of the last apostle? I'd love to see scriptual support for that time frame, too.

PSacramento: "At a time when there was probably a few 100 million people on Earth the black plague wiped out over 30 million of them.

For a modern day plague to reach those numbers it would have to wipe out 100's of millions of people, not thousands or tens od thousands or 100's of thousands but 100's of millions."

This is an often quoted but erroneous and very understated statistic. It is based on a 25% mortality rate in Europe which is correct but does not take into account the fact that the Plague swept throughout all of Asia and Eurasia and probably Africa and did so four to five times within a century.

There were approximately four hundred million people (excepting North and South America) and the first pandemic wave of Bubonic/Pneumonic Plague killed 25% of the population. Three more pandemic waves came within the 14th century killing 20-25% in the second wave and 10-15% in the next. The world's population was probably whittled down to half by the end of the 14th century.

There was also, in the late 14th century again, the genocidal warfare of Tamerlane which killed at least ten million.

The current forecasts for an Influenza Pandemic Resurgence of H1N1 mutating with a seasonal flu strain is just less than 0.5% of the population (for 'First World' Countries).

For example, Canada is predicting about 112,000 deaths in the above scenario with a population of 27 million. This death rate would be over the course of a 3-6 month period meaning approx 20,000-40,000 deaths per month averaged across the entire country. This is essentially double the number of people that die annually from regular or seasonal flu.

A sad and sobering figure for certain but definitely not the stuff of 'armageddon' type predictions.

Read some of my posts for the Armageddon predictions I've been getting from my family. I should be locked up in a rubber room by now based upon the number of doomsday e-mails I get.

If something negative is heard in the news, it is Armageddon / Great Tribulation fodder for the JWs.

You need to talk them down. Do some serious research on the subject that they are bringing up and point out that these things happened before in history and, yet, here we still are.

    Praise Jah.

Its always the latest epidemic/pandemic that is the sign that the end is right around the corner.

From SARS, Avian Flu, Swine Flu each probably last a few months while the scare is huge in the media, and then as it passes by the fear mongering moves on to something else.

I just wish some people had a sense of proportionality where things like the freaking Pneumonic/Bubonic plagued literally wiped out entire villages and had fatalities in well over 40% in some areas far far worse.

    Villabolo,

Thanks for clarifying my post and correcting it :)

I don't think that the plague killed as many in Asia as it did in europe, even with the greater population base in Asia.

It certainly was somehting that at the time was viewed as the "end of the world", yet here we still are...
