I'm so glad they didn't have the French and Germans speaking English.

Yeah if you are expecting an action movie based on the trailer -- well lets just say most of the action is the flapping of gums while people sit and have extended conversations around a table, mostly with subtitles. Just so you know what you are getting into.
I hated the gore ... it was gratuitous and pornographic. Had to turn my head quite a bit. (I didn't mind the blood in the Kill Bills because it was cartoony, this was more realistic.)
The dialogue was well written and generally had a nice bit of tension.
The acting was quite, quite good. Pitt was HILARIOUS ("bonjourno") but the real star is Christoph Waltz as "the Jew Hunter". He will be nominated come Oscar time.
@leavingwt - the basement pub scene was brilliant. The tension just built and built until a glorious release.
I just came back from seeing it. It was "glorious". I thought it was the best plotted movies I've seen in a long time; the story and individual scenes were so well constructed --slowly building tension from implicit awkwardness of the situations (especially in parts I, III, IV) and then seeing things turn on a dime and explode in sometimes unexpected ways. I found it very satisfying, plus there was the classic Tarantino humor and terrific acting (especially from Christoph Walz) to enjoy. I went there already expecting it to be more "talking" than action, so I was prepared not to have "Kill Bill" type expectations of nonstop action. A few other things I really liked..... (1) I liked that not all Germans were played according to the Hollywood villian stereotype; some, such as the soldier expecting a baby, were portrayed in complex ways. The war hero Friedrich Zoller too, (2) The movie surprised me with the intelligent way it handled the subject of language (no American-speaking Tom Cruise Nazis here), frequently making linguistic issues important plot points. The first instance of this I thought was played mainly for laughs, but then it had a serious point (those who saw the movie know what I mean). Also, I got so enwrapped into the story that I completely forgot that I was listening to a foreign language for most of the time, at least for me I hardly noticed the subtitles, (3) The film-within-the-film, Stolz der Nation, made me laugh out loud at how ridiculously lame it was, (4) As in any Tarantino movie, the set up for some scenes leads to quite intruiging and thought-provoking moments. For example, without spoiling the ending, there was a lot in the climax (which was a little self-indulgantly over the top) that made me think....especially in terms of self-reflection and social commentary on what kind of movie this is (especially having just seen parts of Stolz der Nation). I think the viewer has their morality challenged quite a few times in that scene on the question of cheering on what we are supposed to find so repugnant about the Nazis (especially after presenting some characters in quite human terms and the "good guys" as the savages they show themselves to be).
Oh yeah, I also didn't think hearing the innocent word "milk" could make my jaw drop.
It's not a perfect film....I spotted a few contrivances and things that didn't quite work when I thought about it, but it was a lot of fun to be had in the theatre.
Tarantino makes those kind of films that you recognize there is something there, I mean you know it's good, but it's just not for me. Some people drink scotch and think they're drinking idodine.
I don't know, I think he's got talent and he has something to say as a filmmaker, it's just I'm not really interested in it.
Tom Cruise bores me. I would go see this movie because I think Brad Pitt is a great character actor. Loved him in "Burn After Reading" and "Snatch". Hubby wants to see it cuz he loves Tarantino movies.
