When does a JW know he/she has performed enough works to have eternal life? Do the elders let them know?

They don't. Keep 'em in a treadmill eternal hustling and self-doubt. Works every time. That's the beauty of it!

It's true, there is a certain LEVEL of works that a JW must maintain to stay "exemplary" and avoid counsel/shepherding.
In the congregations that I attended, this was the required level of works:
Those works meant that you were a "spiritual" person, even if you were the biggest a$$hole in town.
I used to clean the Kingdom Hall. Was that considered "good works"?
Good works should come from the desire to do good WITHOUT any though of recompense, that is the point ( one of them) of God' Grace given to us through Jesus, works are irrelevant for our salvation, they SHOULD be done because of our love of our fellow man, not for any other reason.
Of course the good works mentioned in the bible are those of taking care of the sick, clothing those they need clothes, feeding the hungry, taking care of those in need, things like that, nowhere does it mention preaching as the good works mentioned by Jesus in Matthew ( as an example).
Even in James there is no mention of preaching, funny how that is...
Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.
First, I am assuming one believes the Bible and that Jesus died for our sins. What the witlesses are doing is saying that additional sacrifices are required--sacrifices in the form of time, money, and everything that means anything to you. Why--if Jesus offered up a "sacrifice, perfect, to which nothing ever need be added--do we need to add more to it? That makes about as much sense as doing something that has already been done perfectly. If one wishes to add more to it, so be it--but no one should ever feel forced to, or that they are not righteous unless they do these works.
And that's on top of that I feel the whole concept of anyone needing to die for our "sins" is a scam. As I see it, mankind was not born imperfect (or sinful). Man learns the basic sins of laziness, dishonesty, and envy by the time they reach about 7 years of age (and those who don't are usually in trouble with the Establishment and their parents). Churches are the prime offender--they teach that we are inherently wicked, deserving Hell or death and destruction by default. Then they put Jesus' death into it, along with the requirements that we support their church, in order to attain salvation from this scam "sin". Adding to it is God's insistence on keeping us distressed, to dangle "deliverance" from this distress (if we give up everything fulfilling for Him, of course). Such deliverance, of course, never comes--every generation is positive that the end is going to be within a few years (ranging from a few months to about 20-50 years, or slightly longer).
When that Almighty Lowlife Scumbag stops creating problems in order to coerce me into submission to partially ease them and make Himself look like a f***ing hero, and starts making up the damage He has caused without expecting to get anything extra for the extra steps and extra work He made by creating the problems, I might back off a bit on lambasting God. Until then, I am not only not doing any works for God, but I intend to continue exposing His scams (and the scams of the Washtowel Babble and Crap Slaveholdery).
sacolton,
I agree that SALVATION is based only in faith, but that doesn't mean one shoudl not do good works, it means that the good works will not make a difference to your salvation.
Many people see this as an this or that issue and its not, that is why james and paul are NOT contrictory.
James is making clear that, while faith is the basis for salvation, good deeds are the actions of faith, you really can't say you have faithin the Lord jesus and then do dick, it doesn't work that way, true faith begets good deeds, indeed, when we have faith we desire to do good for our fellow man because from Faith coems God's love and his love is for all of us so we truly are compelled to do good deeds because of that, NOT for recompence, NOT for salvation but OUT of LOVE.
