Faith? by justification, not grace. I believe nothing we can do can purchase God's approval. Grace is a freely given gift. Admittedly, one that is much harder to accept.

Great points, everyone. They should have set this "experience" to happen some months or a year or two after 9/11. NOT 3 WEEKS AFTER THE ATTACK. That soon after the attacks, downtown Manhatten was still practically under martial law not to mention construction and recovery operations still had 99% of Ground Zero off limits to civilians. And I hope those JWs who supposidly were granted "special" access to Ground Zero were OSHA HAZMAT trained and equipped to enter such a still smoldering and contaminated disaster site (body parts, underground fires, gas buildup, crushed and open sewer lines, unstable structural wreckage.....). That stuff wasn't cleaned up in just a month.

And the JWs listening to this experience just lap this horse-dung up.

"Well I'll be damned. According to this Recommendation Card, you JWs really are OSHA-certified."

As I've mentioned before, I worked at the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan with the FBI. Security was tight. I worked for the United States Senate and security was severe. If I stepped half a foot out the door to check on the weather, an intense search was conducted. I never saw such security as in NY, any part of Manhattan, as that day, weeks, and months. It continues to this day.

Access to private buildings was stopped or minimal. A 1/2 hr PT appt required a five hour screening process. One thing was clear. We could not leave the island. Nurses and doctors from NJ were searched intensely for about one hour at the bridge and tunnels. They described to me what it was like being the sole car on the George Washington Bridge. My mom was old and had asthma. No one knew the toxins. Only idiots believed the EPA and workers were sent in without hazmat suits. Nothing in my life which was full prepared for home being a military zone. We had to work together or sink and let the terrorists win.

I never ran into a single person who thought it was funny. NYers are hardened to world events, Yankee wins, fims, Wall St. broadway, Beatles and dylan. Only a fool would make up such a story. Yeah, the NYPD loses hundreds of members and lets Witnesses in to preach. The National Guard let them in to preach. Vicious military dogs allow them access. I am reacting so strongly b/c that day changed my perception of the world and my safety. It may be one loopy Witness exaggeration but it shows such a callous disregard for humankind so consistent with the religion.

The police and fire dept. ran up those stairs, knowing they would lose their lives. Everyone else ran like hell downstairs. I believe the response showed America at its finest hour. People crying everywhere b/c nothing can be done. It is that bad. Medical professionals are not needed to take bp and pulse of the dead. Every industry came forward and freely gave equipment and expertise. And the Witnesses preached.

Ummmm, excuse me Band on the Run... I distinctly remember hearing how Bethelites handed out bottled water and literature to people fleeing towards the Brooklyn Bridge. Truly life-saving work, indeed.

BOTR, your intial recollections of the events are truely shocking, horrific, and upsetting. It was bad enough seeing the footage over here in the UK, I cant even begin to imagine what it was like to live it.

I remember at a Sunday meeting, an elder banging on that most of the people on the plane who knew the plane was going to crash, began to pray to God.........obviously, his point was that all people have some sort of faith inside of them, and it was the JWs MISSION to help everyone find the "truth"......he didnt mention the horrific realities surrounding this tragic event, just wanted to make them more zealous in their efforts to preach to the masses. They all gave "oohs and ahhs" as their zeal to spread the kingdom message increased, their faces lit up, and the room was awash with rapturous applause...........how they could turn this horrific deplorable event into a positive for them makes me truely ill.

Interesting topic....thank you for setting the record straight, living in MI I remember also hearing those "encouraging experiences"- and having no idea what conditions were like in GZ had no way to discredit their story...although I thought it sounded hokey at the time

A common phrase that the elders started using in our area this last decade and a half is :

"Are you sure your not embellishing the truth?" Obviously they are aware of the practice.

They question the congregate when it's something that they don't want to hear.

But if it takes embellishment to get a member from their congo. up on the assy. stage

to announce the name of their congo, then their all for that! Great elders PR for the CO!
