    Thanks hungerartist,

The overall point of the book seems to be that the strongest influence on Israelite religion was from Northern Arabia, not Assyria, Babylonia (Ur), or Egypt.
Very interesting, a recent book by an Arabic historian called "The Arabian Peninsula" offers much along these lines (sorry I'm away from my books right now)

I have read for example that the Egyptians practiced circumcision. I don't know how well documented this is. A little research would be fun.
Yes, The Egyptians and many, if not most other ancients practised circumscision. The deception that circumscision was in someway original or unique to Moses people is another watchtower/fundy lie. (I researched and posted about this on h20 .. should have kept my post .. the same issues keep repeating ;)

    cheers, unclebruce

    UnclePlunkaDunk,

You trying your hand at bible scholar again? Damn I hate that, even quoting scripture! Oh the pain of it all.

The history of the jews, coupled with the rise of christianity is a really a very interesting and compelling story. My first and still the most enjoyable, exposure to this sweeping saga was provided by James Michener in his historical-fiction 'The Source', if you have not read this masterpiece, you should.

It was the book that hooked me on reading Michener, to date I have read almost everything he produced. Dead now, but his research and ability to make history live, will imo cement his works as timeless.

Get ready to peel back the layer's of 'tell' in and around the 'holy land'...you will be hooked.

After reading your thread, I decided to read the book again. The first time I read it, was in 1966.

    UncleAncient,

There has been some recent discussion centered around the name 'Jehovah'...in Michener's The Source, he use's that very name.

So all this hoopla about using the YaWay, Yurway, MyAdnoids, or any other version of 'lord god'...is not very important. 'Jehovah' does imply plenty as to this particular 'tribal' god's identification and personality.

The real God may well have been Jethro's own, or a nameless one, eh? Or maybe it (god) needs no name at all, I think maybe man's quest to be like god required 'names' just so you could identify, one god from another.

Perhap's that is why man chose to name themselves, so nobody got confused about who's #1 son Methuselah or Melkisedek was bragging about?

Dearest, dearest UnkleSkunkle... peace to you... AND

I did not misunderstand you, my dear one. I think perhaps YOU misunderstood me... in that going to Jethro was quite understandable, and that he WAS a high priest... to JAH... and that going to the high priest was just like going to God, yes, because it was THROUGH the high priest that JAH spoke? I mean, that's what I MEANT, even if it doesn't seem like that's what I SAID...

But the real reason Moses WENT to Jethro was respect for a family 'head'... yada, yada, yada...

    Cheers back at 'cha, Rev...

    As always,

Your 'servant/friend' and a slave of Christ,

    Uncle Bruce,

: Is the RA theory true? The Sumnerian Abraham, The Indian Braman, the great Egyptian sun god Ra etc

Yes. All important gods have those letters in their names.

Farkel, for example. Hey! I'm a dyslexic god! What can I say? Stuff happens!

:... all being a common ancient root/title of the masculine God of fertility?

Yep. That fits me too. Since it has now been proven that I'm a dyslexic divinity, I would ask that everyone please send me all your tangible worldly possessions and deed all your real estate over to me.

It is fully tax-deductible transaction, I assure you.
