European Court: No Crucifixes in Italian Schools

I have mixed feelings about this. Crucifixes can be seen as cultural symbols that transcend religion but on the other hand in Italy they have a strongly religious significance as they also do in Chrisitan countries. But in Italy, on popular feast days there are often religous processions in which crucifixes are held aloft. This happens a lot. So I can see why this mother fought to have them removed from the classrooms of the (secular?) schools her children attended as she wanted to hold them to the secularly neutral education they promised.

Yes i agree with the removal of all religious items from the classroom, yes class rooms should be religious & politics neutral. However is should not extend to the individual personf someone wants to personaly display such items so be it.

Apparently the court said that the cross could be offensive to non christians and atheists. Next christmas trees will be illegal! The woman who took the school to court was qouted - "The crucifix creates discrimination" The incredible contradiction here is blatant - this court case creates discrimination. Italian christians are being discriminated against because the cross "might" offend someone - what a joke. I just think this is the gradual errosion of religious freedoms. Here in the UK a similar stealth attack on basic freedoms is occuring. Christmas lights are now called "winter" lights! Merry Christams is becoming "Happy holidays"! I hope the appeal throws this out of court. The world has gone mad......

When I was at school in New Zealand during the 60s & 70s we never had any religious items permanently displayed in our class rooms, i f there was they were there as a social studies item and removed afterwards. Ah I forget sometimes how much more advanced New Zealand is than many other countries.

religious freedom doesn't need to be visibly exercised in the classroom - for as long as it does it will never be truly free, rather a symbol of slavery to a byegone era
