SO TRUE!!!!!! I was horrified when I heard that in humanitarian crises, JWs limit their help to other JWs - like rebuilding JW houses after Hurricane Katrina, or saying that no one (read: no JWs) in Samoa died during the recent tsunami. Ack.
And I don't think it's anyone's fault that the "season of giving" happens to occur during some of the coldest and toughest months in NOrth America when people need more help (higher heating bills = less money for food; or money for food = less money for heat, etc.). We have food drives, but also coat and toy drives, etc. this time of year.

I had one Witness woman say the same thing to me so I responded "I guess you can apply the same logic to your wedding anniversary too eh?" She said nothing.
Oh, my. My wedding anniversary is coming up. I always get short-changed in the gift department. My wife expects something nice, but generally doesn't do the same for me. It's not a big deal as we generally take a December trip somewhere and consider that spending enough for our anniversary, but she still expects earrings or a bracelet or something compared to the keychain or wallet she gets me. I just might use this line before I present a lame gift to her.
"You said that setting aside a day to highlight our giving thanks was wrong recently. So I applied what you said and realized that setting aside a day to highlight our wonderful marriage was equally wrong. We celebrate our marriage everyday and our gifts are ongoing things like meals and museum visits and warm embraces. That's it."

Well, I had a little email conversation with one of the jw's on my facebook. Here was part of her response:
Trust me I know what you mean when it comes to volunteer events "the world" to those "not in the world", but when I was speaking generally when I said "the world". (yeeeeahhhh riiiiight)<---awsnaps thought I know you must be a little stressful right now because you're not a practicing Jehavah's Witnesses or maybe you don't believe the same things you were taught). (or maybe I'm only stressed out when I see idiots make comments about how the world doesn't show thanks during other parts of the year)
She was one of the folks who'd posted something like "how come people in the world don't volunteer and show gratitude except during the 'season of giving'??!" So I said to her that, in my own experience, whenever I volunteer at functions throughout the year, the ratio of those "in the world" vs. those "not in the world" is quite vast.
And we know how jw's just up to the plate to volunteer in the world................those times of the year are when more people are sad and lonely and need help with food....

Rebel, I am too... I made a faux-turkey from Quorn (the brand) and it was the best fake meat I've ever tried! Their chicken nuggets are good too.
