I like Greg Bear. A few of his books I've read are "Eon", "Blood Music", and "Songs of Earth and Power" which is a combination of two books "The Infinity Concerto" and "The Serpant Mage". Larry Niven's "Ringworld" is a pretty good series too, kinda reminds me of the Halo games.

The giants are wonderful, Asimov, Heinlein, etc. Another interesting one is Andre Norton.

Peter F Hamilton - the nights dawn trilogy - long but difficult to put down.

Anything by Ian M Banks is worth reading he also writes fiction as Ian Banks.

Richard Morgan is also very interesting in a film noir kind of way.

One more vote for Iain Banks. I first read The Player of Games, and it's astonishing what that man can do with a story. Then in Use of Weapons he didn't fail to surprise either, I didn't have such a surprise ending maybe since Star Wars 6. Bank's first novel, The Wasp Factory is not a sci-fi, but is a very good novel too. A bit controversial book, but it opens a door into the mind.

I also like Philip K. Dick's novels, but those might not be for anyone, he often uses heavy allegory, and to understand some of his works (notably Valis, Radio Free Albemuth) you need to know more background of the writer, and his work. He was a bit loony, like all good artists are.

Ray Bradury - I love his discriptive style of visualization. Not only do you see the moment, but feel it. I love Sci-Fi and have read most of the authors, but Ray is the best writer.

Sometimes, I only have time for a short story to read. With Ray and collection of short stories, you get a beginning, middle, and end, in one evening, with something to think, and dream about as you sleep.

My favorite short is 'Ice and Fire', with 'The Martian Chronicles' being his best collection.
