The UN fiasco showed 2 things:
1. They went down to Egypt.They did not trust Jehovah to have his message proclaimed.
2. They do not practise what they preach.
Now there is a word for that........what is it now? Ahhhh it starts with a H........... hypo something......i think.

The WTBTS was an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) of the United Nations for nearly a decade from about 1991/92 until 2001.[1]
This is, in fact, something that the WTBTS still to this day, has not addressed with its followers and many of them remain unaware that it ever even happened.
It does matter, however, and it is not of any minor consequence as some apologists have asserted. As a letter from the United Nations dated October 11, 2001 states in part, “By accepting association with DPI, the organization agreed to meet criteria for association, including support and respect of the principles of the Charter of the United Nations and commitment and means to conduct effective information programmes with its constituents and to a broader audience about U.N. activities.”[2] (bold and italics mine) Now, anyone who is familiar with the Jehovah’s Witness organization is likely also familiar with their book, “Revelation—Its Grand Climax at Hand”, their literature, and stance regarding the United Nations in general, and knows that they regard the U.N. as the “wild beast” spoken of in the Bible book of Revelation and they can hardly be considered as indicating support for the work of the U.N.
The whole situation is fairly well summarized here:
“Even though the Watchtower Society may have felt the need to associate with the UN as an NGO to gain access to the “reference works” section of the library that is unavailable to the general public through the Inter-Library loan system, this is hardly an excuse for the fact that they would have had to compromise their convictions by subscribing to the “Criteria for Association of NGOs” as the following evidence proves.”[3]
Their willingness to compromise their convictions in a secretive way while expecting their followers to take rigid stances on matters that the Society expects them to is hypocritical. The WTBTS is known for taking and making their followers take hard line stances on things such as the flag salute, military service, celebrating of holidays, birthdays, etc. They are known to be inflexible even to the detriment of their followers, like the situation that existed in Malawi during the 1960’s for example.[4]
That they are rigid and inflexible when they want to be and bend when it’s convenient for them to do so is bothersome to me.

As the letter outlines, Watchtower was an associated NGO, and to become associated required Watchtower accept the following:
- that the NGO share the ideals of the UN Charter;
- have a demonstrated interest in United Nations issues and a proven ability to reach target or specialized audiences, such as educators, media representatives, policy makers and the business community;
- have the commitment and means to conduct effective information programs about UN activities by publishing newsletters, bulletins and pamphlets, organizing conferences, seminars and round tables; and enlisting cooperation of the media.
The opening paragraph of the 1991 application form, which the Watchtower was required to submit, contains an instruction to provide information yearly to the United Nations. It states:
"provide us with proof of your organizations non-profit status and with an annual report on its activities related to United Nations."
He also shows how their coverage of the UN changed during the time that the WTS was an NGO.
