I think AllTimeJeff and Sister Scully have a very bad attitude and have been 'listening to the voice of strangers'.
I Have a New Method for Dealing With Ridiculous Assumptions

I bring this up because I have been caught up lately in debates that I normally don't involve myself in.
You don't need a "new method".
You just need to stop getting caught up.
Don't make it sound SOOOOOOO complicated.

It seems that most people in the "world", (gotta love that terminology, don't ya?) have the best method for figuring out how to deal with the hopelessly stupid. They did it to me while I was a JW, and they continue to do it to JW's today. I take this to mean that while you were a witness, you too was 'hopelessly stupid.' So what woke you up?

I was going to say I wasn't interested in this thread, but Outlaw got my attention. What's up with Sesame street?
Actually, I keep getting caught up in some of those threads (I may be one of the guys you've been arguing with). The problem is, I AM interested, and I'm trying to understand opposing points of view. From my persepective the conversation looks like this:
Them: "Hello there! I would like to show you how by using calculations involving scriptures found in Ezekial, Daniel, and Revelation, along with the clearly established fact that Jerusalem was destroyed in 607 BCE, shows that Jesus came to rule invisibly from the heavens in 1914. Isn't that good news?!"
Me: "I understand how you made the calculation, how do you explain the fact that no reputable historian agrees with you?"
Them: "You've been talking to evil apostates, die scum!"
This pretty much somes up the last conversation I had with JW's at my door.
It is frustrating to want to talk to people that don't feel any need to explain what they think.

JEFF- Basically people will believe what they want to believe. Whether they are theists or not. Really, there is no reason to try to debate or argue with a theist ; as many times they believe what they do out of fear of not knowing the future and wanting to put a label on it to feel better . Whether the label is God, or life after death, resurrection to heaven, hey , if it makes them feel nice and cozy like sitting in front of a fireplace, more power to them.
Personally I have bigger fish to fry like exposing mind control cults , i.e. the WT society for manipulating their members by unethical and " immoral " mind control techniques which break families up and wreck lives. I know what I believe , and what other people believe doesn't really affect my views or deep values. I just want people to have the freedom to be able to choose. Something NONE of us were allowed to do in the Jehovah's Witness cult

Crap! I forgot all about werewolf! Sorry.... I am packing for a Christmas trip right now...
Really, there is only one person on this board who has ever really got under my skin. (BTS may be happy to know it isn't him, lol) I know and accept that theists are going to do as they do. I have no qualm with that. Other then that, I know better then to try to argue and prove points when people are polarized. And I admit, I am polarized on many issues too, so whats the point really?
Scully, you are cool... :)
Flipper, I am with you on exposing cults, one especially comes to mind.....
And now, I am going to briefly close my doors and try to get some zzzzz's.....

The balance I should try to strike more often is discussing and knowing when to walk away. (or even when to involve yourself in the conversation) The other extreme to avoiding conflict is to not involve yourself in other people's lives and points of view. That isn't a great idea either, and its one reason why I really like this board.
If you don't get caught up in people, you are a loner. Which is great news if you don't want to argue. Far too often though, to be interested for former JW's means also that we HAVE to express ourselves. It's a lesson of leaving the cult. Right or wrong, you will hear from me! I will not be silenced. Why else come to an internet board?
