    I agree with Wha Happened... he'll be back.

    Be ginger with him, Restrangled... he needs a friend who understands his situation (probably better than he does!)

    On some level, he recognised you as someone who "knows".

    @cantleave

    I was out 10 years and still thought they were the truth

    Not everyone leaving does because they thought it was wrong. I beleived it was me that was wrong. Me that was broken. I just could not live up to the standards and lifestyle anymore. I lost my way, lost my wife, everything. It was three or four years before i could look in a mirror and say, 'i like you'.

    So, beleiving that it was me with the problem, i could not see it was the religion that was wrong. So i spent 10 years thinking, 'i know its right, i just dont want to be a part of it.' Thus for 10 years i was an apologist for them too.

    Until a month ago.

    I also think a large number go back because after a lifetime of insulation from society, when they leave they are simply not able to function in the real world. They go back, not for love of god or remorse but because it is safe.

    I really can't understand why people come back.

    He needs helping de-programming from the cult. He never received it. The cult fills a void that he was unable to fill himself.

    Restrangled, I hope you can have a good, honest chat with him. Maybe you can help him see what he was incapable or unwilling to before his reinstatement.

    It is always one-sided with witnesses. JW's are sincere and nice as long as you nicely listen to them. Just as soon as you expose their fraudulent religion the conversation is the same as over. However, they see nothing wrong with "exposing" what they consider to be the wrongs of other religions. I agree that this gentleman who just got back in did probably did so for family reasons. I don't think anyone really misses the KH meeting format, ie, talks, the WT Q&A study and field service.

    I cannot understand anyone going back, even if they have buried their head up their ar*e and not researched, apart from wanting to get back to family life again.

    My Wife says that even if they had the truth , silly hypothesis I know, she would not go back, the Dubbie life is abysmal.

    I get a similar idea to palmtree from reading your account.

    He gave you that handshake after you told him you were out - if he was a fully reformed back-in JW, wouldn't it have been more of a nervous/uncomfortable thing for him to do?

    So maybe he has gon back to be with family but is mentally still out - and he was genuinely glad to have contact with you, he now has an ally who understands.

    Don't be too upset about what he's done just yet, wait and see - he may need you
