  But two critical pieces of information appear never to have been connected: National Security Agency intercepts of Qaeda operatives in Yemen talking about using a Nigerian man for an attack, and a warning from Mr. Abdulmutallab’s father to American diplomats in Nigeria about the son’s radicalization in Yemen. If the National Counterterrorism Center or any other agency had those two items and never linked them, Congress and the public will want to know why.

  The echoes of Sept. 11 are obvious. Before the attacks on New York and the Pentagon, the N.S.A., the Central Intelligence Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation all had gathered bits of intelligence about the future hijackers. The C.I.A. sounded the alarm about an impending attack, including the now-famous President’s Daily Brief of Aug. 6, 2001, titled, “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.”

  But the information that could have unraveled the plot remained at each of the three agencies and was never put together.

  Security Theatre of the Absurd

  One day, our grandchildren will marvel at our preposterous approach to self-defence. They'll wonder why we squandered billions on useless security measures. They'll be amazed at how we harassed millions of ordinary citizens and made flying as unpleasant as possible. They'll shake their heads at our naive faith in high-tech fixes to stop low-tech killers. How do we catch crotch-bombers? By buying full-body scanners, at $200,000 apiece!

  Airport security is a “show designed to make people feel better,” security expert Bruce Schneier says. It might catch stupid terrorists, but certainly not smart ones. He says only two things have made flying safer since 9/11: the reinforcement of cockpit doors and the fact that passengers now know how to resist hijackers.

  But in the face of seeming failure, the authorities must be seen to take decisive action. This is the reason why those of you with weak bladders are now advised to take the train.

  Some societies (such as Israel) build walls to keep the killers out. If this involves a certain collective punishment of the killers' neighbours, they figure, then so be it. Ours must be the first society in history that has tried to stop the killers by imposing collective punishment on ourselves.

  How did we arrive at this absurd impasse? Because of our elaborately overdeveloped concern for human rights, combined with our towering fear of the hurt feelings of Muslims. If everyone is equal, then differential treatment must be racist, which is why we have decided that your grandma from Moose Jaw gets the same pat-down as a devout young male Muslim from Nigeria who did a recent stint at a religious school in Yemen.

  The White House believes the CIA knew this guy was planning to use a crotch-bomb to blow up a plane and kill 284 people and didn't tell anyone in order to make Obama look bad? Unbelievable! This Obama guy gives narcissism a bad name.

  In that video Obama called the guy just "an isolated extremist," as if that meant something important. ALL extremists are isolated in countries they are planning to attack! You don't see them in big public groups holding hands and singing "kumbaya", do you?

  Obama also said "the passenger allegedly tried to ignite an explosive device on his body." Allegedly? How did his crotch catch on fire then? Spontaneous combustion? Earth-shattering orgasm?

  Obama has pretty much banned the use of the word "terrorist" in his administration.

  Congress in the 2009 amendments to the military commissions law, relabeled “enemy combatants” as “unprivileged enemy belligerents.”

  Well, at least we have the reassuring words from Janet Napolitano when the passengers themselves on the plane subdued the puke when she said "the 'system' worked!"

  The Keystone Cops are alive and well, only these Keystone Cops are dangerous to your health and well-being.
