the rules have been tightened up recently with the cahrity commission, you may not be able to get much done about older cases

    but ya never know.

elders have for a long time been able to weedle out of being involved in cases regarding abuse and other things as they claim clergy

    priveledge.

but as a charity trustee it may be possible that they may find that they're accountable for things they've got away with before.

    Trustees can be sued,

    Trustees can be held accountable,

Charitys can lose their charitable status if they have not upheld their responsibilities.

nothing to do with religion, nothing to do with clergy priveledge, different ball game.

so maybe the question should be wobble ........ are elders who put their names down as trustees to charitys safe?

the buck will probably end with the ones named as trustees.

    Dear Nelly,

It would be good if the buck stopped somewhere.

Just a side point, there is no such thing as clergy privilege in English law,, as far as priest penitent confidentiality is concerned, many an ignorant elder has tried to say their hands were tied because they could not say what they knew, NONSENSE.

The point is that if all the Congos in the U.K are not putting the best practise in place as outlined above, then their charitable status should be called in to question.

There is no excuse in the 21st. century for little ones to be endangered by outmoded ideas of religious exemption from what the rest of society does as a matter of course.

They want the tax rebates, make the bastards comply with the rules. If we know for sure they are not complying, PUBLICISE it, we had local youngsters come along on their own to the meetings, would their parents have let them if they knew they were in danger ?

It is part of my job on a day to day basis to take up CRB (Criminal Record Bureau) checks on volunteers and staff. Each organisation should have CLEAR guidelines regarding child protection and working with vulnerable adults. The law in the UK is changing and it will be the organisation's responsibility to ensure that volunteers and staff are not barred from working with these groups. The organisation will be held responsible if something happens and they have not taken up the proper checks. It's all about money and compensation so that might make the JWs sit up and listen!!!!! not the cryings out of small children. It is a constant frustration to me that I cannot take on good volunteers to work in e.g. our Kids Club until they are cleared, but it is GOOD PRACTICE. I am very familiar with the Charities Commission and have witnessed their investigations into an organisation that I know of (and always felt 'dodgy' about). Their findings said that all the staff and volunteers should be CRB cleared. However, I knew that one of the people involved was evading this - he had a criminal record due to throwing his wife down the stairs and breaking her leg - charming! In the end, the Charities Commission do not want to do anything unless you show them the evidence, they do not want to investigate things by themselves - I suppose their resources are limited. So my advice, would be to get the evidence first and then approach them.

I worry about our kid. Don't like to let her out of our sight, and definitely don't like it when people hold her or the males look at her. Wife would never believe the seriousness of the danger, of course, but I do. There are no background checks. Granted, there may not be background checks in a lot of places. But here, people can know about abuse and never tell you. Figure it's safest to assume no one can be trusted. Which is what I would assume anyway.
