I think this was a tipping point for many. It was obvious that the Mexican brothers were disturbed by the practice and kept checking with the GB. Over and over they asked the question it was as if they couldn't believe it either.

The arogance and stupidity would not have been tolerated anywhere else. It is a wonder that no one has attempted any form of retribution against them. So sad, and so pointless.

It was this chapter that left me feeling numb.........I couldnt believe what I was reading. I remeber crying with sheer frustration at the fact that this was needless and unneccessary. Those poor people. What they must have went through..! I still have a deep seated anger about it, and cannot bear to dwell on it too long.

In many ways, this is probably a much more direct view into the rotten top of the society government than any strictly doctrinal issue.

This kind of total dishonesty, much like the UN NGO thing, is a revalation that makes it abundantly clear that this dictatorship will never change.

It is one thing for a religion to be kind of "honestly" wrong about some doctrine, and change it later, - but this kind of hypocrisy is not justifiable by anybody who is halfway honest.

    This was my tipping point.

I was a witness during the 70s and heard the reports too. Reading CVoC was an eye-opener for me too and totally burst my belief they were just honest men who made mistakes. There was no mistake. Just like in Rutherford's time they were willing for Witnesses to be beaten and tortured and jailed. But these guys went even further allowing rape and murder to added to the list of atrocities they are resoponsible for.

I still have not read the book. I got it for my wife and she shared key thoughts for me. The Malawi/Mexican issues blew her mind. She had written letters to the Malawian govt.
Usually I read a book on vacations, (fiction). I love to read a good book, while sunning in the sand on the beach.
COC doesn't have vacation written all over it, way to serious to read for fun.

It's a must-read for all JWs and ex-JWs and anyone even loosely affiliated with JWs.

Back in the 1980s Professor James Penton (former 4th generation JW and author of the book Apocalypse delayed) tried to recruit me as a spy to infiltrate congregations in Mexico and dig up some hard evidence on the issue of Jehovah's Witnesses bribing Mexican officials to get their military cards. I wanted to do it badly but since my Spanish has a thick American accent and I look anglo I declined. I feared that the Witnesses in their eternal paranoia would easily suspect me and be on double alert afterwards.

My husband (ex) read Crisis in a day! I was so excited, because I thought this would unlock some of his beliefs. Alas, all he said was that it was a very sad story "if true"!! Are there many others who have read it and remain true to the false? After that, I felt there was nothing else I could produce as evidence of the falsehood of it all, and it began our demise.

leavingwt - On reading the book?

I plan to, but I didn't finish my thought.

I want to devote time so as to read it through entirely, but not on my vacation when I usaually read a fiction book. And where my mind drifts between the sound and sights of the waves,...and of course the bikini's walking by.

Good posts all...Iam reading the book now. I passed the ch. about the Malawi atrocities and nearly wept. I was still making up my mind but this book solidified all of the things I think are wrong, and prove it to NOT be Jeh's org. Those letters from the brother who did all the research on 1914 really annoyed me. Their replies were awful and indignant, not loving. They do not care about truth or decency, or any witnesses as individuals, just power and control. Ray Franz was not high in my estimation coming into the 'truth' and not 'till recently. His book is candid, honest, insightful, loving, and a good worl of literature. All should read it. A copy should be sent to every witness and them made read it. He is a light amid darkness and the WTS are the true apostates.

I read C of C edition 3 some years back and just remember turning each page thinking...I knew it...I just knew it. The fact that they were prepared to overlook what the mexican brothers were doing and even encouraging it simply astonished me. Brooklyns biggest concern was $$$$$ and how to hang on to it.

Even the fact that the Brothers werent allowed to pray or sing at meetings as this could give them away as being a religion was unbeleivable. Absolutely shocking. Clearly $$$$$ before God in this situation.

Maybe you can highlight some more nuggets and jaw dropping moments from the book Jambon 1. It is good to be reminded.
