restrangled -- I agree wholeheartedly. One of my favorite pianists of all time, Nyíregyházi, was a terrible alcoholic who often played so drunk that entire passages came out as the musical equivalent of gibberish. Neverthless the intensity of his emotion was spellbinding, scarcely without parallel when he was at his finest.
Still, extremely precise musical "pyrotechnics" can send a chill up my spine. Switching from piano to violin, this is one of my favorite examples of "cold perfection" ... it brings tears to my eyes even though it's played with ZERO emotion:
