As I was growing up my dad would always make a special effort to enlighten his Catholic brother-in-law. He’d ask my uncle to get out his Catholic Bible and show him scriptures. One of his favourite arguments was the doctrine of the Pope’s infallability. Dad would ask “How can a reasonable person believe a mere human is infallible?” Another subject that was rehashed many times was the trinity. Dad would always comment the math aspect and ask “How is it possible to add 1+1+1 and get 1 for an answer. My uncle would listen, just smile and remark, “You’re dwelling on details”. These details seemed unimportant to him.
My uncle was baptised Catholic, learned Catholic doctrine and will be having a Catholic funeral. I don’t believe my uncle ever imagined the Pope was perfect and I don’t think he worried excessively about the trinity being true or not. He led his life by his personal principles, taking into consideration his faith when he felt it appropriate and ignoring Church doctrine he disagreed with.
My dad, on the other hand, would often say the G.B were not infallible. He would tell us the group was made up of imperfect men that made mistakes. But it never seemed to occur to him to question their ideas or math. He believed, obeyed and planned his life around them. When he receives the April 15 th Watchtower concerning “this generation” he will once again adjust his thinking and his math to conform to the new light. Of course, he’s quite used to math-adjusting by this time. The strange thing is, it just occurred to me, that the latest 1+1=1 is bringing him closer to the 1+1+1=1 that he once argued impossible.
So the April Watchtower got me to thinking: Who’s more intelligent?
The Catholics? Their church tells them their leader is infallible and 1+1+1=1. But the Catholics don’t seem to believe it or worry about it and certainly don’t plan their life accordingly.
Or the J.W.’s? Their church tells them their leaders are merely imperfect men. And now they teach 1+1=1. But the J.W.’s seem to accept and believe every word coming out of their church’s mouths. They make sure to keep their ideas in line with the latest church thoughts and are even willing to bet their lives on them.
