Sorry I was replying to awildflower's statement. But I do find that people who live in Hawaii like visitors to know that they too are part of the US.
Just went to Hawaii this past November, from the states of course

You are going to have so much fun on Oahu. So much to see and do. Absolutely beautiful.
The closest I ever came to death was almost drowning while trying to surf Waikiki beach. Never surfed before and thought it would be easy. The rented board didn't have a foot strap. Went very far out in the water and was the last guy to go. The big wave smashed me onto the board cracking a rib, then shot the board away from me. Every time I would almost get back to the board a big wave would drive me under water and shoot the board farther away. This went on and on, until it was life or death. I had one more attempt left in me before I was going to drown. The biggest wave yet was coming and with all the strength I had left, swam as fast as I could for the board. The big wave picked me up and shot me through the air and my arms landed over the board as I hung on for dear life. When I finally made it back to shore I collasped on the beach from exhaustion.

OMG, Think! That's horrible, I'm so glad you made it!
Did anyone see you struggling out there??
I was very far from shore and the last one to go. No one was even close to me. It was very scary. At the time, I was in top condition and an expert swimmer, but you can't fight the waves forever. Beginners do not realize how dangerous surfing can be. It is not as easy as it looks. A few days later I seen a Coast Guard helicoper out there looking for a new surfer who had drown.

You truly got lucky!
Big waves at Waikiki beach??? Good thing you didn't go to Sandy, or Bellows, or the North Shore.
I always just stuck with boogie boarding and body surfing. Never felt comfortable getting on a board.
