Fear not those who kill the body, but cannot destroy the soul (Not in the new song book)

I finally got my own copy of the new song book in English. I notice that the lyrics in one of the songs have been changed from:

Fear not those who kill the body, but cannot destroy the soul

    to,

Fear them not, O my beloved

The former wording was a direct quote from Jesus in the gospels, the most straightforward reading of which always seemed to me to contradict the Witnesses' belief that the soul does not survive death. (Of course they offer the convoluted explanation that in this verse "soul" means "future life potential" and so does not imply an immortal soul) I wonder whether it was embarrassment at the blatant contradiction that prompted them to remove the direct quote from the Bible in the song and replace it with "O my beloved". I don't know that that phrase was ever even used of believers (rather than God's Son) in the Bible.

Yup... that has been a thorn in their side for a long time. People ask: If JWs teach that the soul is not separate from the body, then how could this thing that jesus said be true?

You know your religion is pretty fucked up when it has to change song lyrics because it conflicts with official doctrine...

I often pondered over the meaning of that phrase.

I thought that the songs removed were because they were written by worldly people and apostates. I guess that extends to the words of Jesus as well.

Faithful to the end continue, I will help you reach your goal.

"I will help you reach your goal".

To me, it bothered me to have to sing this. Not "He will help you reach your goal", mind you. It is as if the singer was pretending to be Jehovah Himself--and, at the time they were telling me to throw away my "bad" songs, I saw this as blasphemous when I had to sing it. They insisted that I was supposed to sing it anyways, despite blatantly pretending to be Jehovah (I wish I could actually do it, at least just long enough to impeach the real Jehovah for good and make Him suffer like He made me suffer).

I am expected to pretend to be Almighty in a song, but I can't listen to Journey. Really makes a lot of sense--at least in the eyes of the witlesses.

I never reconciled to myself that line - NEVER!

Why did it take me 38 years to run away?
